"We need to rip open our party. Think about making it almost open source."

Mark Holland gave a barn burner speech at the ALP convention on Saturday night that had the entire crowd buzzing - I'll be sure to post it if I can track down the video.

Until then, here's what Mark had to say about the challenges facing the Liberal Party earlier in the day.

  • I could not agree more. The Liberals need to start over. They need to abandon their support for the status quo, they need to stop polling for policy, they need to seek out controversy and not run from it and they need to sow division between their opponents.

    With regard to the Conservatives, the Liberals need to drive a wedge between libertarians and theo cons by championing social liberalism in way that the Liberal party has not done since Trudeau introduced his omnibus bill. Doing so is also the only hope the Liberals have of making inroads into Quebec. With regard to the NDP, the Liberals need to sow, among other things, divisions between NDP's Quebec base and its base outside of Quebec by firmly rejecting asymmetrical federalism.

  • @ Koby: Agree 100%, although I see it less as an issue of 'sowing divisions' within the other parties than a re-affirmation of what the Liberals really stand for. I think taking strong positions on issues resonate more than we might think. The Liberals have a glorious opportunity to re-affirm themselves as the party of civil rights and social reform. The tragic Martin experiment with 'asymmetrical federalism', aided and abetted by quislings such as Lapierre, Frulla and Dawson, needs to be firmly and explicitly repudiated by the Liberal Party once and for all. The Liberal Party has always been at is best when it stands unapologetically for a strong, united Canada where the federal government is more than 'headwaiter' to the provinces.

  • I know a lot of Tories don't like Holland, but that's mainly because he's a strong performer in QP (albeit a bit over partisan at times).

  • I'm a Liberal. Yes, Mark Holland was good at getting under the Tories' skin in QP, which is why they hated him.

    But he kept scoring own-goals against fellow Liberals.

    If he doesn't understand this, then he has limited value as a rebuilder.

  • I thought Bob Rae was in charge of rebuilding the federal NDP. Err, Liberals. Isn't he supposed to tell everyone what to believe when it's time to believe it?

  • If anything judging by the tory comments on here Liberals need more people like Holland the virtual attack dogs that hit them where it hurts. The drive to take on the ideologues on the right has been severely lacking ever since Chretien left. Holland just scares the hell out of the tories. Apart from that they need to define what they stand for, no more apologies for socially liberal policies or long standing progressive values associated with the party. In fact, Rob Anders et al need to be challenged head on. Why is it that the constituents of Calgary West didn't get a champion among the Liberals when they tried to force him out at the nomination process by signing up for the local tory riding association.

    Holland was the only Liberal in the Durham region for 3 consecutive elections, this guy won cuz of his own personal strenghts and clear stance on issues such as gay marraige and the gun registry etc. If the Liberals under Martin cut family reunification then it doesnot make sense for any immigrant to vote Liberal over conservative, the party that reduced it further. They are both the same as most people nowadays say. Can you imagine a conservative gov. instead of a Liberal one apologising and compensating minorities for draconian immigration laws passed against them in the racist past??? but it happened didn't it? what are the Liberals afraid of!!! the people that are anti non-euro immigration, pro guns, against social progressivism, anti-french never vote Liberal anyway.
