Michael Ignatieff's Fallback Plan?

Gordon Brown resigns - Labour leadership race to follow

  • Rumour is a trio of Labour heavyweights were in Canada a few months ago trying to convince Michael to come back to his former homeland to grasp the brass ring.

In Britain there are a lot of Labour members who think Michael Ignatieff could be the second coming of Harold Wilson...

  • Rumour has it eh? Got a link or are you just making stuff up?

  • Gene why does that comment raise your ire any more than the title of this post? Don't they discuss the same thing?

I think it might not hurt to lighten up a little.

  • Actually, Gene, I'm with you on this one. Iggy crossing the pond to join Labour. That does sound ridiculous.

Doesn't he have to be a British citizen?

  • Technically Canadian/Commonwealth citizens are eligible to vote and stand in British elections. I am not sure about the other way although there is some language in the BNA Act that allow British and Canadian citizens to be appointed to the Senate

  • Um anonymous, Im not full of any ire. I just wanted to have a link to see if you weren't full of hot air. As for lightening up maybe you should as you jumped to such serious conclusions.

Ignatieff would have to be a British resident in order to vote or be a representative. You have to live there. If he had Italian ancestry it would be different (diasporic Italians are eligible to vote in Italian elections and have representation of a sort) but you need to have an address in Britain to start. We haven't been called British subjects since the 1930s and a lot has changed since the BNA act.
I voted when I in Britain (federal and in the 2000 London mayoral election) there but I can't now. Not even a mail in.

BTW, Im in a pretty good mood today, maybe you should mellow out and do a bit of fact checking.

  • The first comment was just putting the "computer journalist" Dan invented to work.
Just replaced Liberal with Labour, Pierre Trudeau with Harold Wilson, plugged in the appropriate country names and voila, a real old news story turned into a new one. I'm a bit surprised anyone took the comment remotely seriously and started doing any "fact checking".
