"I Have Made Mistakes"

Guergis out:

April 9, 2010

This morning, I tendered my resignation as Minister of State for Status of Women to the Prime Minister which he accepted.

The past 9 months have been a very difficult time for me. I have made mistakes for which I have apologised. I want the people of PEI to know that when I spoke emotionally I was speaking about the airport as I would never insult my father's birthplace. I apologise again. I have worked hard for Canadian women and I am proud of my record of my accomplishments on their behalf.

I will continue in my position as MP for Simcoe-Grey and continue to serve my community.

Sincerely,

Helena Guergis, MP Simcoe Grey

  • As a proud Islander, descended from the immigrants who first sailed from Scotland to make their own mark on that red soil, all I can say to Ms Guergis, is that regardless of the fact that your own father was an Islander, that in no way indicates to me that you were referring to the airport as opposed to the Province.

Between you and Mike Duffy, I have had enough of faux-conservative Islanders.

So please, the lot of you, you can quite sincerely, go to hell.

Maybe that way real Islanders can get some peace and quiet.

  • Well said Sean.

She really sounds like she just doesn't get it doesn't she?

Perhaps she spent too much time looking in the mirror admiring her own beauty and not noticing the unique and quaint beauty of PEI

  • I've read that she works hard and capably. A temper tantrum in an airport isn't a big deal to me.

Her husband seems like a dink, but I feel sorry to see her go. We need more women in cabinet, not fewer.

    Sad news.

  • I don't really regard PEI as a "real" province. It should just join Nova Scotia.

  • Conservatives have not taken any serious efforts to increase the number of qualified women competing for Conservative nominations. Jacques Beau Vert, write the Conservative Party and encourage them to do better. And please don't base your opinion of PEI's status as a "province" on the quality, integrity or ethics of Mike Duffy.

  • Anon "...Conservatives have not taken any serious efforts to increase the number of qualified women competing for Conservative nominations... "

Where's your evidence? I've only been to nomination meetings for two different ridings in Edmonton and there were women running in both. They lost, but they tried.

How, exactly, does a political party "increase the number of qualified women" anyway? We are either going to run for public office or we are not. I, personally, will not, ever. Not only because I don't want my personal life (and those of my friends and family) in the media glare, but because I used to blog and have absolutely no interest in some of my posts coming back to haunt me.

So... how, exactly, does a party encourage any target audience (gender, race, etc) to run? I'm curious.

  • First step would be to toss aside any Conservative MP who has publicly used terms that can be viewed as degratory to women.

Actually, I'm working more on the basis that a tiny nowhere island with zero culture beyond a century-old series of mediocre (yet certainly whimsical) novels and a population that hardly merits a mayor let alone province-hood is not a real "province". Why don't we make Kitchener-Waterloo a province while we're at it?

Oh, and you're too late - I already wrote to Harper to express my enthusiastic support for Mary Simon as G-G.

    MARY SIMON!

It's not like Liberal MPs who use derogatory terms our tossed aside -- why a different standard for the other party???
