Tough Crowd to Impress

With little movement in Canadian polls, let's gaze to the south, where a new poll shows us just what Republicans think of Obama:

-67% agree he's a socialist
-57% agree he's a secret Muslim (And he can't be doing a very good job of keeping it secret if half of all Republicans are on to him)
-42% believe he's a racist
-38% agree he's "doing many of the things Hitler did"
-24% agree Obama might be the Antichrist (No word on how many respondents answered "Might? He damn well IS!")
-Most offensively of all, 22% believe he "wants the terrorists to win"

It's hard to know just how solid the methodology behind this poll is. But it's certainly something to keep in mind for some of the pundits who have spent the week bemoaning how disrespectful left-wing Canadians are. Let's face it, every part of the political spectrum is littered with morons.

    Amen.

  • Agreed...

    But Republicans more than most

  • The Republicans are good kids.

The Repugnicans, on the other hand, have orders and sub-orders of Moron that are on a whole nother plane.

  • Republicans do seem to have more than their fair share of whack jobs.

They have been a bitter, and angry bunch ever since their super hero Bush, left office.

If they can't control the presidency, they are going to make damn sure, they give the democratic president, all the shit he can handle.

If they manage to take back the house and senate in November, you can already hear the screams for "Impeachment"

Lord knows trying to deliver health care to all your citizens, is an impeachable offense.

Starting a war, and invading a country under false pretenses, and bankrupting your nation.

    Not so much

  • It's true, morons have no allegiance to any particular one ideology...

  • Republicans - I have some in my family - are decent folks (but ONLY the ones who stick to their traditional conservative ideology). The knuckle dragging, luddite, cave-dwelling morons from the religious right/NeoCon/SoCon movement, on the other hand are the fools who have dragged the US into the "Tea-bagger" diatribes, and lower of the lowest common denominator in the US.

This is the fall of American civilization. History has shown that the embracing of science and culture is what grows societies. From Plato, Socrates, the Sufi scholars, Arab astronomers, Roman architects, European artists during that continent's escape from the "Dark Ages (of religious domination)", French philosophers (whose thoughts inspired American revolutionaries), etc., etc., etc., great societies have been led by great men and great thinkers. America is being dragged into the abyss by ignorance and close-mindedness.

One could say "let the lemmings leap", if they weren't so close to us, that they effect us every time the "elephant rolls over"...

Lets imagine a poll of Democrats taken in 2005 or so, with the same sketchy methodology that asked the following questions (the thing is that most reasonable people would hang up the phone in disgust at those questions):

    1. Is Bush a fascist?
    2. Did Bush know about 9/11?
    3. Has Bush taken some of the same actions as Hitler?
    4. Is Bush a racist?
    5. Does Bush do whatever his father tells him to?
    6. Bush invaded Iraq in order to...
-because he is in the service of the Saudis?
    -accelerate the rapture
    -kill Muslims
    -all of the above
    7. Is Bush creating a police state?
    8. Did Bush rig the 2000 election?
    9. Did Bush rig the 2004 election?

One other issue is that when you are out of the majority, your support tends to be down to a fringe. Many people that voted for Bush identify as independents today. Many people that voted for Clinton identified as independents in the 00's.

  • If one is impartial in trying to figure out why Obama does what he does one is forced to agree with several of the Republican views. It is logical to assume that being raised in a Muslim culture he would adopt at least some of the Muslim ideology. It happens to atheists raised in a Christian culture why wouldn't it happen to Obama growing up in Indonesia? When all of Obama's friends and mentors are self avowed socialists isn't reasonable to assume that he shares their sentiments? I really don't imagine PM Harper would become fast friends with Jack Layton even if they work together on a few items of mutual interest. Their world views are too much at odds.

As for the Hitler, Anti Christ stuff well that is just SOP to make the other side look bad. If you don't believe me google Bushitler. The loons on the left disparaged their unfavourite President in a similar fashion to the loons on the right now disparaging their unfavourite President.

  • As H2H points out, today's Republicans learned a lot from the Democrats of the past decade.

    How sad for us all.

By Blogger Paul, at 1:21 a.m.

  • Republicans may have learned from Democrats, but they then took the crazy to a whole new level.

However, many liberals and civil libertarians from both sides were uncomfortable with many of the provisions of the Homeland Security Act, believing that warrantless wiretapping (for example) gave law enforcement too wide a berth in investigating suspected terrorists. The word "police state" may be inflammatory, but I think people had a legitimate concern.

But the Obama-is-a-secret-socialist-muslim-who-want-to-convene-death-panels crowd within the GOP is far greater than the Bush-knew-about-911 "Truthers" of the Dems.

  • I think we have to point out that at the same time that a large portion of the left believed that Bush was a gibbering idiot man/monkey hybrid AND simultainously a Machievellian political figure scheming to create a fascist state and managing wide reaching clandestine forces that orchestrated 9/11 among other thing.

Crazy and ill considered prejudices regarding one's opponents is hardly a novel manifestation.
