I've also heard international athletes will be forced to wear "Just Visiting" t-shirts

The new olympic gear looks familiar, eh?

  • I'm disgusted. So, vote Harper and you'll get a choice of buying an Olympic T-shirt/hat, etc. or get a free body bag.

  • Is it only me or does anyone else think the new logo is just ugly.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:26 p.m.

  • They are both ugly.

  • This may be the first time I've ever defended the Conservatives, but it seems like the "C" logo is far more influenced by the Canadian Air Force roundel than anything else, which fits with the whole retro, Canadiana theme HBC seems to be going for.

  • I don't know, I'd love for this to be innocent but since when does blue belong in any kind of Canadian design, ever? Either the people at HBC are mindbogglingly, profoundly terrible at design, or VANOC's branding people were leaned on very hard to incorporate some blue even though it has nothing to do with the country and has not really appeared in any olympic designs.

I hate this kind of thing.

  • Yeah, I totally agree with myself on that point. This is a big story and Liberals better get to the bottom of it.

  • Awesome Gayle! Even aesthetics is partisan! Let's go with that: the Tory-Olympic logos are ugly. Topple the government! Throw the bastards and their ugly design ideas out!

By Anonymous GastownGrit, at 10:36 p.m.

  • Yeah Gastown. I am running around all over the place saying we should throw the bums out because of the logo.

    Holy fuck.

By Blogger Gayle, at 10:59 p.m.

  • Well, not totally only for that, but that could totally be like a big line for us in a stump speech. You know, keep it for the end or something.

Maybe we could hand out t-shirts with the Conservative logo on it. That would really hurt the Conservatives. And it would make our point big time.

By Anonymous GastownGrit, at 11:11 p.m.

  • Look, I gotta go or else you'lls all be calling me GassytownGrit. Ciao!

By Anonymous GastownGrit, at 11:12 p.m.

  • If you turn the olympic logo the right way and use your imagination it also looks like a toilet seat.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:26 p.m.

  • It is a crappy logo that reminds me too much of our meanest Prime Minister; Harper the Horrible.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:01 a.m.

  • I thought that the Cons symbol was around much longer than the Olympic one. If I am wrong, I stand to be corrected, then it is the designers of the Olympic symbol that should be questioned.

By-the-way. "If you turn the olympic logo the right way and use your imagination it also looks like a toilet seat." Comming from the Grits ... sounds like S**ts ..... It doesn't surprise me that you think in such toilet terms. Most, not all thankfully, Liberal minds are always in the gutter.

    I liked the following coment on the link to the satory:by holtby;

"Does this mean that the Team Canada hockey jerseys that are white and red and include a maple leaf are actually part of a Liberal conspiracy?" I think the Cons should get to the bottom of this also.

I'm in complete agreement, but I also think this issue is worse than a non-issue -- its a losing one. Canadians could care less about it, as noted in who Canada Day celebrations continue to become red-white-and-blue-er every year. While I don't doubt that the CONs, with their deep pockets and vindictive nature, wouldn't flinch at less-than-subtle crossbranding in exchange for $, it only makes us look paranoid and desperate to harp on these things. Stick to the real issues -- start slamming his fiscal update, the PM's one-year anniversary from 'it would have already happened' and 'no deficits' talk... That's where we gain ground, not attacking their logo.

Lets see... how about on the flag Canadians flew in 1812, at Vimy Ridge, and on D-Day.

(I'm pro red ensign, if you can't tell)

  • I seem to recall a news story a few years ago about the Conservatives actually setting out to change "national" branding connected in any way with the federal government.

The concern was that so much of the branding of government programmes involved the "liberal"- red flag, that it re-inforced the idea that the liberals were Canada's natural governing party.

I doubt that this is a really HUGE priority for the Conservatives, but you can see the effect - not only in the Olympic logo, but also in TV ads that use blue and green arrows to help promote Canada's recovery plan.

It's subtle, but it's there. Unfortunately, whatever branding (or "un-branding") the Conservatives acheive will be undone as soon as the Liberals gain power again...unless they change the flag!

  • Designed by the Bay....currently American owned.

Take a look at the Tim Horton's logo - very similar. American owned...now coming back to Canada. You know, Harper's economic view.....minimum wage jobs and artery clogging donuts.

  • Looks familiar? Like someone above said, it looks more like the Royal Canadian Air Force roundel than the Conservative Party logo.

    Besides, er, who cares?

By Anonymous rc, at 12:21 p.m.

  • As a Habs fan I've never understood the concept of a blue maple leaf. A nice dark Habs blue looks spiffy with enough crimson. But black should be a no-go.

  • while we're being petty how about adding a little blue touch to the Canadian flag...it's much too Liberal red. Get a life Gayle and clean up that potty mouth.
