Goodbye Newman

I missed this while in Vancouver, but Don Newman will be signing off CBC's Politics brooooaaaaaadcast for the last time this June. This is disappointing news, since Newman is one of the best political journalists in Canada - fair to all his guests and respectful of them, but also able to ask the tough question and slice through the BS.

Looking back, I have to identify the moment I started watching Don's show as the crossing of the line from casual political user to full-blown junkie. So, because of that, I'll personally be sad to see him go.

I would go on with my praise, but I need to be fair with time.

  • I have a lot of respect for Newman.

All the other journalists take bait, and start asking questions within the spin they're given. Newman always asks questions from within the spin of your opponent.

He would sound totally dismissive, and say "Yes, but your opponent would say," and you'd think "Wow. he's being hard on this guy." Then the other side comes on for an interview, and he challenges them just as hard

And he just seems to know what everyone's line is on everything. Remarkable guy.

Plus, he's the only one who will ever be able to say "Welcome to the Pooooodcast" quite like that and not sound silly.

Sad to see him go. But at least we still have Peter.

  • Hopefully Newman will return as a freelancer to do special reporting during elections & other important political events.
    He will be sorely missed!

  • Newman is a wealth of knowledge, a walking library of political knowledge. This is the time we need someone like him.

Tom Clark - Washington wannabe, doing the put down Liberal thing (required by CTV?).

Newman stops them when they start the spin and asks pertinent questions and wants answers.

Clark - tell me something I don't know - duh - he copies that from "American" Chris Matthews.

Sad to see him go, but he's earned his stripes to retires.

Newman would be a great senator - because he knows his stuff.

  • Just hope that wet noodle Keith Boag doesn't relpace him. There has to be someone else.

Chris Hall and Susan Bonner have been seen in the chair over the past few weeks. That was my first indication something was up with Newman.
