You're My Obsession

From a long-time reader comes the following word clouds, based on the complete text of every single members statement given by the Tories and Liberals during the month of March. It's fairly easy to see what's on Tory minds these days:

For a higher resolution copy of the Tory one, click here. For the Liberal one, click here. (I also have a pdf version - e-mail me for it)

  • Hmmmm....the Cons constantly insert a remark about leadership - uh, if Harper was such a good leader they wouldn't need to try to convince people.

...empty wagons rattle the most, as they say.

  • Very slick.

Is there a higher resolution copy available?

  • Interesting how many more different words are used by the Liberals than the Conservatives.

  • Higer resolution would be great if possible.

  • That's "higher".

  • Neat, how it looks like the Conservatives are worried about the Liberals, and the Liberals are worried about Canada.

It's like a drawing of the collective psyche.

I wonder how big the word "bathroom" will be in the Liberal cloud after today. :)

  • Although I realize how time consuming putting these together must be, it would be really interesting to see a series for each month. It would be a neat way to track the parliamentary zeitgeist.

  • Ha! Like any good propoganda, the author controls the message and how it looks.

  • Much better than the last one you showed us. The Liberals have obviously matured and grown since then. It's a great sign.

  • Wow.

    That is trippy.

It's becoming painfully clearer all the time that the government is now more interested in staying in power than running the country. The Conservatives are becoming very Party First, Canada Second.

  • My sympathies to you folks for Iggy's flip-flop and "untruth" on the asbestos issue - caught red handed by the Ottawa Citizen.

And Ivison wonders if Iggy's got a Plan B?

  • Gauntlet: Neat, how it looks like the Conservatives are worried about the Liberals, and the Liberals are worried about Canada.

Nice try. Even if we accept the simple-minded premise that using a particular word in Members' statements is proportional to concern for that topic, "Canada" still ranks second-biggest in the Conservatives' cloud. And instead of attacking "Conservatives", the Liberals direct their venom at the "government" (second-biggest word in their cloud).

  • Really, not much different than ANY Government vs. Opposition, of ANY stripe...

  • "Really, not much different than ANY Government vs. Opposition, of ANY stripe..."

It's a little hard to tell which is which in those two cases, isn't it? Seems that the Conservatives are most concerned with the party on the opposite benches - which is probably what the Loyal Opposition is supposed to do.

Surely there must be more important issues for the party forming the government to talk about. Like, say, governing. "Obsession" seems appropriate; but I'm almost disappointed there was no mention of the Sponsorship Scandal in that time frame, though -- The Conservatives have been faithfully whipping that horse for, what, four years now?
