Form Letter

A friend of mine forwarded on this e-mail he recently received from Brian Burke, commenting that it looked eerily similar to one he might get from another new leader.

The parts in red are my additions. Here's hoping that the Liberal Party doesn't wander in the wilderness for 40 years.

Dear (Name),

A little over 10 4 days ago, I accepted an opportunity to become president and general manager leader of your Toronto Maple Leafs the Liberal Party. I want to thank the Board of Directors caucus and owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Richard Peddie, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment National Executive, for entrusting me with one of the most important jobs in hockey politics.

Running the Toronto Maple Leafs Liberal Party of Canada is a dream job for me. It's a true honour to be associated with an iconic team party with passionate fans followers, and a strong sense of history and tradition.

The Leafs are Liberal Party is now turning a page in their its storied history. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Rebuilding this team organization will require commitment and dedication. Cliff Fletcher Stephane Dion has made many positive steps in the right direction. Over the next few months, our management team will evaluate our players organization and start to address the opportunities that will support our team's party's progress on the ice at the polls.

We have started to create a strong nucleus of young talent like Luke Schenn Justin Trudeau and Mikhail Grabovski Ruby Dhalla, who will continue to grow, develop and excel under the Leafs system. And probably the biggest advantage our team party has is an arena a country a hundred ridings or so filled with loyal fans every night supporters who want to see their team party succeed.

As I said in my introductory news conference, I have three pillars that I base my teams party on:

1. Having a team that plays an exciting and entertaining style. The Leafs will justify the price of the ticket every night on the ice. Social Justice
2. I believe teams need to operate in a fiscally responsible manner. We will spend our fans' and our sponsors' money intelligently and make decisions that are right for the team. Economic Vitality
3. I expect all of our players and coaches to be leaders in the community. Community service is not an option. I am thrilled to see the Leafs organization already has a strong culture of giving back to the community through initiatives and programs led by the Leafs Fund for Kids, Leafs Hockey Development and Leafs Community Relations. The Leafs lead the NHL in community initiatives, team appearances and fundraising. This will continue to be a priority for our team. Environmental Sustainability

These three pillars created a winning culture for my teams our party in the past and I anticipate they will continue to have the same positive impact on the Leafs Liberal Party going forward.

I would like to thank Leafs Iggy Nation for a very warm welcome to Toronto. This is a great time to be affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs Liberal Party of Canada. I hope you'll share in my excitement as we get started on the work ahead.

Sincerely,

Brian Burke Michael Ignatieff

  • How can the Liberal Party lose when we have such a representative leader? Why if there's an election Ignatieff has a guaranteed 100 votes from the National Executive and Caucus alone.

  • Because of King Iggy I'll be sitting on my hands next election.

  • Just a question. Who got nation status first, Quebec or Leaf Nation?

  • Is Harper Sean Avery?

  • Actually, I kind of wish someone would make the ticket price worth it in politics, too. Maybe we'd sell more than 60% of the seats.

  • Nicely said, Gauntlet.

Wow time changes everything... who'd guess anyone would ever compare the winning LPC to the Leafs. Interesting editing job mister.

  • Very entertaining; thank-you!

Not sure whether the "Toronto" reference which remains in the last paragraph was intentional or not - certainly, it does appear that the LPC is increasingly just the LPT.

Is it too much to hope that the Liberals are finally willing to accept that Political Parties should be funded by their supporters (with limits on individual contributions), as the Leafs are?

  • I for one won't vote Liberal again given the way the arrogant Ignatieff got his position. Not good enough for the grassroots?

  • Your post makes no sense. Ignatieff is the best federal Liberal leader since Jean Chretien. And to boot, Ignatieff is actually a liberal, unlike the previous leaders going back to Pearson. Ignatieff is not only going to rebuild the party, but show the door to the socialists within. The next couple of years are going to be very exciting!

  • Yes! Show the door to those socialists in favor of liberals!

(I suspect that 'muffin man' here is one of those preciously naive people who thinks that 'liberals' are libertarians with spelling problems. Nobody correct him.)

  • Our environment record is 56th among 57 nations. Our child care provisions are 20th among the 20 OECD nations. I hope Iggy jacks up the tax rates in the platforms, seeing as how boomers aren't paying down debt or addressing looming health care shortfalls (no hospital transparency and no best practises health jurisdiction sharing as a condition of transfer payment reception?). I don't trust Ignatieff's foreign policy under a Republican presidency, but this isn't an issue until 2013.

No naive individuals here - a true liberal is a social liberal and an economic liberal too. You are correct; I don't need to be corrected!

  • "... boomers aren't paying down debt ..."

Some facts may be interesting to learn:

    http://www.canadianeconomy.gc.ca/english/economy/#top

Click on the "Federal debt" link to find values as at Fiscal YE Mar 31, rounded (down) below:
    2008: $457B (paid down $10B)
    2007: $467B ($14B)
    2006: $481B ($7B)
    2005: $494B ($2B)
    2004: $496B ($9B)
    2003: $505B ($6B)
    2002: $511B ($8B)
    2001: $519B etc
    2000: $539B
    1999: $554B

The current government has been paying down debt at a faster rate than since 2001. I don't see factual support for the claim that boomers aren't paying down debt.

  • Throw in Chretein surpluses and subtract future projected Harper and Mulroney surpluses.
Can't find the link, but the last news byte I read about a month ago from some Canadian health research center pointed out the boomers will be short about $80B annually, shortly. Probably Chinese robotics will bailout the latter (born 1960s) boomers and the federal debt fucking over (not to mention environmental) of younger generations will probably be politically viable for the oldest (born right after WWII) male boomers. Older female boomers and younger male boomers will be screwed. Take away Mulroney's debt, take away Flaherty's tax cuts and throw in some tar sands taxes and they'd die with dignity and maximize palliative care quality-of-living.
Oh well, boomers tend to vote for a Conservative environmental platform that parabolas *all* societal wealth gains post-WWII. Maybe veterans were too shell shock to raise their children to respect the circle of life and the chain of progress?
I urge all ethical traders to short the fuck out of Canwest. Ethical rich people should start fighting back against those who are destroying progress. It's what their parents did against the Nazis. Now we are the Nazis, minus Que/NFLD.

  • I honestly wonder how Conservatives sleep at night, knowing the world they are leaving to their children is for the first time since the Black Death, poorer than the world they inherited. Federal debt for last minute palliative care should be viable for a few years covering the care of oldest men. Future robotics should cover the later born women. I wish there would be some way to triage which middle boomers voted for platforms that didn't unleash like a blitzkrieg, AGW on their own children. The ones who voted to pay pocket change to save Earth, should be the ones who we blow a wad of $50s on to extend life and ensure death with dignity.
NEP doesn't give AB the right to use WMDs, you fucking douchebags. Ruined my fucking country.
