Department of Bad Excuses

The Conservatives say Toronto Centre Tory candidate Chris Reid resigned this weekend after telling them that he couldn't commit to serving four years in government.

  • If you want to keep your party faithful in as good spirits as possible,

    its best you keep focusing on conservative troubles in this Liberal stronghold,

    'cuz you won't have many ridings with which to do that by the looks of things.

    A blowout is appearing increasingly likely.

  • To follow up Ben's comment, I wonder if the time will ever come in Canadian politics that some parties don't run a full slate of candidates in ridings that they have no chance of winning. In the US Congressional elections there are many districts where the Republicans and Democrats run uncontested.

  • Ben, the problems they have with candidates are all of their own making. They had a perfectly fine candidate in place, Mark Warner. The only fault anyone could find in him is that he was willing to be associated with the Conservative Party. But because he's a decent man, who cares about the issues in his riding, including gay and poor people, they had to fire him, and instead decided to replace him with a succession of homophobic lunatics - including a homophobe who's actually gay himself.

    And as CalgaryGrit points out, it's all so pointless. The riding isn't in play, and by the looks of things if it ever does become in play again, it will be the NDP or Greens who capture it. The Conservatives have poisoned their own brand in Toronto, and nowhere more than in Toronto Centre. Conservatives: Don't imagine for a minute we're going to forget or forgive your party's unblemished record of homophobia on ALL issues, going far beyond the definition of marriage.

  • It is important to run candidates even in the hopeless ridings, if only to get the public funding based per vote.

    It doesn't have to be a great candidate, but you need to make sure they won't embarass you.

  • there are enough "embarassing" candidates to go around, so don't point the finger at just the Conservatives.

    besides T.O. Center (of the Universe?) looks to like only Liberals, by the spread left to non-winners.
