If You're Watching The Democratic Convention And Have A Bottle Of Whiskey...

...take a drink every time a speaker talks about how much they love the troops and/or have a war veteran relative.

OTHER RANDOM THOUGHTS: -Biden's giving one heck of a speech. "These times require more than a good soldier, they require a wise leader" - ouch.

-I must say the "accidental" freudian slips of calling McCain "George Bush" are amusing, but they'd get old really quickly.

  • Yeah in that regard, the Kerry speech was particular ridiculous. "Hey! Look everyone, Barack Obama has a war vet uncle and he just happens to be here tonight!!"

  • That's how Americans think.

Canadians leftists talk about how much they love terrorists and how they have a muslim neighbour.

Americans are proud of their military while leftist Canadians think the troops are "baby killers".

    See the difference?

  • This dialog is not inherent to "Americans", it comes out of the experience of the Vietnam war, where the political left protested, attacking the troops and making various anti-patriotic statements. The left has still not lived down the damage made by the antiwar movement (the 1972 election was one of the biggest landslides in history for the Republicans).

Secondly, just from a national interest point of view, the Democrats don't want a Democratic win to be perceived as resulting from weakened American resolve at home. Once again turning to the 70's, part of why the Soviets breached detente, part of why Pol Pot knew America would not intervene as he ravaged Cambodia was because Jimmy Carter's victory (and the Republican wipeout in congress) came in part as a rejection of the Vietnam war (also of Watergate). If other countries believe America does not have the resolve to intervene abroad, they will have fewer qualms about harming American interests.

Canada, by contrast, has never lost a war, and is internationally irrelevant, so we don't need to worry about whether we are perceived as divided or not.

  • I liked his son's intro too, or rather I liked the content. I thought he stepped on the delivery a few times.

  • Anon 10:25 - your lack of intelligence is showing.

Talk about stupid statements some respnders make. You have to wonder

I think Kerry was just trying to prove that it wasn't only Republicans that fought wars, like they'd like everyone to believe...he was also addressing the patriotism issue.

Biden's son's going to Iraq in October

  • CG, you make me wish I was watching.

Oh, I'm a Canadian by the way, everyone. So, as you may have already gleaned from the anonymous post, I feel that the military are all what's known as "baby killers".

  • Party unity! Bill and Hillary do the right thing.

  • I'll give the Clitons credit for at least "looking" like they were on the Obama love-train during this convention. Sometimes it's hard to fake that sort of thing so they're either genuine or good actors at it.

  • No way no how would either of the Clintons do anything otherwise, CG.

Even if Madam C. wants to run in 2012, she (and her husband) know that if they display even one sign of disloyalty, or for that matter, if they look like they're going to sit out the campaign, her goose is cooked.

And Bill C *is* one of the greatest "political actors" we've seen in recent years, aside from maybe Chretien. And yes, that's a (reluctant) compliment to them both.
