Early Results

Round 1 voting for the federal elections has closed and our winners are:

1988 64%
1896 36%

1878 56%
1925/26 44%

1957/58 53%
1979/80 47%

1935 59%
1911 41%


So, the federal semi-finals will be:

(1) 1988
(4) 1935

(2) 1878
(6) 1957/58

Tomorrow, I'll be launching the first round of the provincial side of the bracket.

  • Yeah, I'm surprised '79/'80 lost out to '57/'58 too. The other three winners I voted for.

    In 1988 vs. 1935, I'm 1988 all the way. Free trade has been a tremendous benefit for Canada. It's hard to imagine what would have happened had Turner or Broadbent won (shudders).

    1878 vs. 1957/58 I'm not sure about. I'd be interested in hearing others' opinions on this match up.

  • 1878 vs 1957/58 I would give to 1878 comfortably; the former had major long-term policy implications with the introduction of the National Policy; the broader protectionist frame it introduced remained in place until, well, 1988. It also meant the building of the CPR and thus the settlement of the West.

    57/58 was an epic change of government, to be sure, but the Chief did nothing as effectual as that.
