  • He was always a joke in quebec and most people know that he got where he is because deep down unfortunatly gay leaders get nowhere and are not very popular, oh we accept, but not fully, and thats a leson any party should learn.

  • This shows that a campaign based on race bating may get you short term success but if that is the only thing you have then you will crash and burn in the long run.

  • Is that... an ass that his head's up?

  • absolutely correct:

Andre Boisclair lost the election because he was gay. And only because he was gay. He actually proved himself to be, other than the gayness, a brilliant, visionary leader with an exciting program to offer Quebec -- we just couldn't get over the gay thing. We were heartily impressed by his cocaine use during his time as cabinet minister where he did lots of really, really smart things. I struggle to name them, but that's not the point: he was gay.

As for Mario, its also spot on: he got some temporary blip in support due to race baiting - which always has a transient appeal in this cauldron of racial hatred that is Quebec.

Quebeckers are, as your analyses correctly point out, a vile, vicious group of people.

  • shame on you for suggesting that boisclair lost ebcause he was gay.

boisclair lost because he could no longer appeal to the right wing base of the PQ. It held for 30 years but people do not want this anymore.

The big winner last night was charest. If dumont succeeded these people to stop thinking about sovereignty, he may have done the PLQ's dirty work

  • Antonia, Boisclair ran as a right-winger (by PQ standards), willing to roll back the welfare state - that is precisely why some unions were hesitant to support him (and why Quebec Solidaire got any votes). The only area where he was to the "left" was in his civic nationalism, on which, I agree, Mario Dumont outflanked him by appealing to Quebecois on ethnic grounds (although everybody did a bit of that - eg. the ridiculous response of the premier over the girl who played soccer wearing a hijab).
