Foreign to them

The Hill Times has the latest Maxime Bernier shuffle speculation (featuring anonymous Tory sources! Hmmm....). Favourite quote:

"The talk is that Maxime is going to end up at something fun and more at his level, like Revenue," one Conservative insider told The Hill Times last week.

Snap! You'll remember that Bernier was assigned to the portfolio less than a year ago, after a series of high-profile bumbles by Misters MacKay and O'Connor. I'm not sure this is neccesarily a portfolio I'd want to get if a shuffle does happen this summer.

If you were doing a report card on the performance of the Harper government in different areas, you have to think that Foreign Affairs would get their lowest mark. It's been one mistake after another in that file.

Which kind of makes you wonder why the Liberals didn't think Afghanistan would be a winning issue when they had a chance to make it the issue earlier this spring.

  • It will be Treasury Board to replace Vic Toews, who will leave Cabinet.

Max is a bit of a "loose cannon" who may actually feel stifled under Harper. But one who can do damage, since his dad was appointed an ambassadorship by Chretien.

If you want to destroy Maxime's career, feel free to dig into some of the smut mags in the mid 1990s based out of Quebec.

  • Who goes into cabinet from Manitoba if Vic is out?

The obvious candidates are Fletcher and Bruinooge. Bruinooge faces a tough re-election fight and it wouldn't hurt to have an Aboriginal in Cabinet, but surely there is a temptation to appoint Canada's first-ever disabled MP to a ministerial post.

  • Fletcher was health critic in the opposition shadow cabinet. I always found it odd he was left out of cabinet.

  • And people wonder why Harper keeps those muzzles cinched so tight ...

The PM knows the Good Lord hasn't exactly blessed him with the kind of front bench strength that Chretien had in his heyday.

In the Tory ministry ranks, there are a scant few that appear poised and in command of their portfolios. Prentice, Day, and Strahl come to mind.

Until Harper gets some better front bench material, he'll probably have to keep most of his ministry gagged (though it probably wouldn't hurt him to shuffle his top performers into the most scrutinized posts).
