Je Me Souviens?

If you want evidence of how quickly the media narrative can turn on you, look no further than Jack Layton. The man was praised far and wide for his historic Quebec breakthrough in Outremont last fall. It was only the second Quebec seat won in NDP history and was a sign that the party was on the road to great things.

But, that's so 2007. Bad showings in two low turnout meaningless Toronto by elections and suddenly the house that Jack built is beginning to crumble.

  • He also bristles at recent comments arguing that the results show he should ease his attacks on the Liberals, saying less than 10 per cent of his comments take aim at them.

    Less than 10%.

    Hahahaha.

I think this is his real problem - he doesn't come off as authentic because he plays fast and loose with the truth.

  • While the Quebec result was attributed more to the candidate than the leader, the Toronto results are much more difficult to segregate.

But I wonder how gleeful certain Liberals would be at signs of blood in the NDP water: their own Party certainly has much to gain from painting other Leaders as weak.

  • Great quote from Bob Rae today on Question Period "The NDP and the Greens can't replace Mr. Harper. They can snap at his heels, they can bark at his car..."

The NDP has some great MPs. Joe Comartin is one of my favorites and for Stephane Dion it is a real shame that he coudn't get Joan Beatty elected. Hopefully Jack Layton sticks around, he has done a lot of good for the NDP.

They're not in business to replace Harper, they're trying to replace the Libs in opposition.

  • They're not in business to replace Harper, they're trying to replace the Libs in opposition.

And a Conservative government can help fulfill this delusion. Just like in Alberta.

There is a reason why Tories like Ralph Klein and Stephen Harper pimp the NDP.

My NDP friends feel dirty when that happens. I'm not sure Jack Layton, or the apparatchiki around him, has the same reaction.

I wonder if May liked being called a 'dog' by her lib buddies?

  • So how is Rae going to do it.

Midsummer nights rebellion? Or will he use his much talked about intellect to simply manipulate Dion into resigning "for the good of the party"?

Dion's best play is to roll the dice now. Too bad he can't visit the Michaelle, because getting his BC-MB-QC MPs to vote down this guv is not a sure thing.

    I bet rebel alliance.

  • I don't understand how May can get off scolding Harper for being a control freak, yet May is so much of a control freak that she is telling Layton how to lead his party. This isn't the Green leadership we need.

  • The NDP under Layton have really lost their way. They have done a terrible job of getting socially democratic ideas out in the public domain and it goes with saying Layton dream of replacing the Liberals is so much pie in the sky. I would love to see the NDP drop Layton and cadre of advisors. The emergence of the Green vote in big urban centers makes that more likely. It only goes to show the best chance to grow the party is not inside the 905 and in Metro Toronto.

The NDP has to go back to its Western roots and focus on taking back voters that had abandoned them for the Reform Party. It still polls far better in BC and Sask than it does in Ontario, especially Toronto. They should also look to be fight with the Conservatives for Liberal voters that have slowly been bleeding away over the years to both themselves and the Conservatives in Northern Ontario.

  • May doesn't sound like a control freak. She's only telling Layton to be nice and work together.

What's a control freak? That's someone who is the only spokeperson for his party. Someone who tells the media who can and can't ask questions.

"May scolds NDP hostility towards Green party

The recent byelection results show the NDP should end its feud with the Green Party and start figuring out how to work together to topple the minority Conservative government, says Green Leader Elizabeth May.
"I have people coming over and saying, 'I'm going to vote Green because I think the NDP is more interested in eliminating the Liberal party than in restoring to power a government that actually cares about issues I care about,'" she told CTV's Question Period on Sunday.
"My advice to (NDP Leader Jack) Layton which is open and really in the spirit of co-operation -- rethink the policy of constantly denigrating the Greens and acting hostile towards us."

By Blogger JimTan, at 3:27 a.m.

  • Layton's problem is that he likes to set a gentle, reasonable tone when his natural constituency wants to hear the voice of a strident activist. Elizabeth May is the easily most unreservedly anti-Harper and is accordingly scooping more and more of the non-Tory vote.

  • People are just so turned off of the whole partisan circus, the NDP should be taking a look at their communications and take Layton off of the obvious scripted talking points.
