Backing Down...and Loving it!

Showing a complete lack of leadership, the official opposition backs down and lets the budget pass. Shameful. Disgraceful.

I guess we can start writing the Mario Dumont obits, eh?

  • It takes far more courage and values to support the government's budget than to have members sit on their hands or be conveniently absent or worse yet - abstain. All Canadians should be deeply offended by Dion and the federal Liberals disregard and disrespect for Parliament and democracy. Dion's obit was written back when he was still sniffing around behind Martin.

    It's interesting that the G&M story missed the funniest quote of all where Marois says that maybe they should call Dumont 'Mario Dion'.

  • "Backing down, and loving it." Well, you and Cherniak may love it, but I am Lib supporter, and frankly am tired of reading about it.
    Sure, what have you done for the Liberal party? Frankly a lot more than Dion, and the rest of the do nothing MPs.

  • Actually, you can start writing Dumont's obit. Ever since he became Opposition Leader, Quebeckers have gotten a closer look at this guy, and discovered what political insiders already knew -- he is a shallow opportunist who is in no way ready to be Premier. What's more, his caucus is about an inch deep in terms of depth and experience. Can you imagine if that guy had formed a government? Yikes. It wouldn't have been quite as bad as Bob Rae in Ontario in 1990, but it would have been close.

  • The ADQ supports the budget so they will vote for it. The Federal Liberals are against a budget but refuse to vote against it. Dion really has hurt the Liberal party.

  • I am not a Conservative supporter but I hope that voters punish Dion and the Liberals for their 'logical' (as tonyguitar calls it) decision. I see their decision to abstain, disappear and play politics as gutless and an affront to the voters who elected the MPs to represent them rather than trying to defend the sinking ship HMASS Dion. The Conservative's post Mulroney standings in the house would be sufficient punishment.

  • Funny how the voters didn't punish the Conservatives for abstaining on the Liberals 2005 budget, eh?

    Look, I agree it's starting to get a bit ridiculous, but there was nothing in the federal budget (or this Charest one I gather) worth forcing an election over and the Liberals (and ADQ) didn't want to go into an election.

    So they took the only rational course of action. Vothing for or abstaining is really the same thing, especially in the eyes of the general public.

    well put. The cons abstained in 2005, and harper survived. in fact, just 3 years later he is a leader and dion isnt according to his ads. funny how 3 years earlier the same abstaining on a budget was fine, and he was not called 'not a leader'.

  • It was one circumstance CG. The Liberals are doing this over and over and then going to the media and threatening to bring down the government.

  • CG... it's not the abstaining thats really the issue... it's the way Dion and his host go around saying, "We don't agree", and then abstaining.

    If he had one gram of sense, he'd just not comment one way or the other, and then abstain.

    But nope, Dion always goes out of his way to position himself on the opposite side, and then supports the tories.

  • This isn't rocket science, the Liberals have a credibility problem and Dion's "strategy" has only made it worse. The only thing that will keep them alive is the 'my mummy and daddy always vote Liberal so I always vote Liberal' demographic.
