The Sixth Priority

After slaying the fiscal imbalance, the Tories have directed their attention to a new mythical creature:

Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

"The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

"Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot," says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

In fairness, there are probably more bigfoot sightings than Liberal sightings in Alberta but Mike Lake still seems a bit out to lunch on this one.

  • Or maybe the MSM is doing a lazy-ass job, as usual.

"You don’t make judgment calls on petitions," Lake told Sun Media yesterday. "We try to do it as a service to constituents."

Asked whether or not he believed in Bigfoot, the Tory offered a firm "No," followed by a chuckle.

"But if he did exist, I’m sure he would vote NDP," Lake kidded.

  • Now, were the petitioners serious? Or were they some of Chak's supporters trying to cause a ruckus? I mean, Bigfoot sightings are attributed to B.C. not Alberta, are they not?

  • I've read elsewhere MP's are obligated to present petitions when presented with one by constituents. There is special time set aside in the House for the presenting of petitions. It's obvious Lake wasn't serious.

  • You all make good points about why this isn't Mike Lake's fault and why he shouldn't be mocked for this.

I choose to ignore those points and mock him regardlessly.

I must admit, it makes for a more entertaining read.

Sounds like the same thing our politicians are doing regarding Doan.

The Hill has become a farce...

  • Ha ha ha! What a clown. The guy is a backbench nobody and he makes a name for himself with this.

I can hardly wait for the campaign. At every forum there will be a guy in a gorilla suit in the room mocking Lake.

What I want to know is why does Mike Lake ignore the unicorns and carebears?

You'll have to wait a while, as I believe that's the same riding that the recently nominated Grit had to resign from due to racist writings and breaking gun laws in his past.

Which is too bad, because THAT would have been a fun riding to watch.

  • I take it, gritpatriot, that you don't think MPs should feel obligated to present petitions from constituents as a service to them?

By Blogger Brian in Calgary, at 4:17 p.m.

  • MP's are not obligated to present petitions they receive. would we want him to present a petition calling for the USA to nuke somebody? no. doesnt matter if people signed it, the mp should make discretion and not waste people's time.

CG: why not create a website, similar to rickmercer's dorisday one and call for the protection of all unicorns.

  • Hey, in advance I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic, I was looking for a contact form and didn't see one.

Anyway, a while back I got kind of pissed off flipping between the O'Rielly Factor and Democracy Now, not so much because the had such completely different views, but rather because they both claimed to be objective. So I started coding a website that would allow people to be called out on biased opinions, where the community would decide which ideas get the most recognition. Well, after 6 months of work, today I’m finally launching it: http://VocalNation.net

Anyway, I’m placing the control of this site, and control of the debate, largely in the hands of those who read this message. I'm starting things off by just picking a handful of conservative and liberal blogs to mention this on so that it will at least start off with a good balance of opinions from either side. After that, I guess it'll be the side with the strongest arguments that'll take control dictate what direction the conversation goes. May the best side win.

Oh yeah, if you remove this for being off topic, can you please at least let me know so I can add another blogger in your place it keep it balanced?

    Thanks,

  • I always figured big foot was some conservative recluse living in the hinterlands of the land on his own. Under that definition, Mike Lake is just protecting a friend of his.

But if we disregard my supposition, if Lake is trying to protect a wild life species, does this make him an environmentalist?

    Hmmmmmmmmm. Think about it.

At least you are being honest about it CG, which is more than I can say for that sad excuse for a news story that started this all.

Oh and if a petition called for nuking the US or was racist etc, the Clerk of Petitions would deem it not acceptable and reject the petition. This petition was considered in order and was accepted.
