It's a Very Complex Decision
A lot of people will no doubt try and spin Belinda Stronach's decision to quit politics as a blow to the Liberal Party. But I think we should take a moment of silence for the people this retirement will affect most - the blogging Tories. When you think of the hundreds of jokes at her expense they've posted over the past two years and the thousands of insightful comments those posts have generated ("you're sexist!", "no I'm not!"), this is clearly the biggest loss to the blogosphere since Jean Lapierre resigned his seat.

I don't think this is that big a blow to the Liberals, although it will spun as such. She has seemed extremely bored to me lately; I kinda had a feeling she wouldn't turn out to be a career politician. Best wishes to her.

Decades ago, when Ted Kennedy was running for his brother's Senate seat, his opponent said that if his name was Edward Moore, instead of Edward Moore Kennedy, the candidacy would be considered a joke.
Might not the same logic be applied to Belinda Caroline?

My read on it is that she doesn't much enjoy being an Opposition MP. Which means that it's only a blow to the Liberals in the sense that she seems to suspect that she'd stay an Opposition MP if she stayed in politics.

well, plenty actually. but I'll give you two hilarious things. needless to say, if you've invested heavily in their image as Godsends, you will not find this funny:
Ken Dryden cracks most of Canada up because he couldn't tell you how to open a door is 1000 words or less. You must be loaded up on shrooms to appreciate any of his speeches.
Michael Ignatieff because he's a walking joke. Did Israel commit a war crime? If so, shouldn't he be taking that up with the ICC? And now that the leadership bid is over, why doesn't he pull a Pelosi and finally make that trip to Israel? Calling the families of 9/11 victims a circus sideshow would be hilarious if it wasn't deeply offensive and mean. Anyway, his litany of stupid comments is well known.

If Belinda Stronach is assuming her new corporate position "effective immediately", wouldn't she be required to resign her seat, not just announce she's not seeking re-election? What if the election isn't called until 2008?

The best part of this whole thing is the CBC story which lists at the end the many Liberal MPs not seeking re-election.
Jim Peterson, Lucienne Robilliard and even Andy Scott get bullet points along side of Paul Martin and Bill Graham. I agree that, by itself, Belinda's retirement from politics won't be a big blow to the Liberals, if any blow at all. However, I remember what a big deal the Liberals made of her defection to them. It was taken by many as proof that there was no room for moderates in the CPC. Couple her retirement with those of all the other Liberal MPs (the total I think now stands at 16), and the Liberal Party has opened itself up to the counter-accusation that perhaps there is no room for moderates in the Liberal Party under Dion's leadership.

Between Lapierre and Belinda leaving the average IQ of the House just jumped up several points.
I'm fairly confident that Dion is going to be able to step in and fill those big shoes as an object of mockery and dislike.

Michael Ignatieff IS a joke, CC is right. He was a star initially, but he burnt himself out with stupidity.
Ah, but no one was mocking Diane Finley for health problems, Chucker. It's fine to make fun of people with health problems for reasons such as liking Corey Hart or Corey Feldman or the 70s -- people with health problems are just like everyone else and don't need kid gloves.
