Le Quebec Prend Des Forces

The new Tory French attack ads have been released and they go the route of props and humour to make their point. At first glance, I think they'll be more effective than the English ones but it's always hard to predict these things. Here's the quick run down:

Domino: Hits Dion on the fiscal imbalance which makes sense with the Harper-Charest gambit being put into place.

Porte: It's kind of cute. Tries to tie Dion to Adscam and features cameos by the Dion convention signs and a Jean Chretien puppet. Given that most Liberals would kill for Chretien's Quebec numbers, I'm not sure who that'll help.

TV Vente: They try to hit Dion on a lot of different issues here, including the environment. I think the gag seems a bit more forced than on the other two.

  • My first impressions: "Domino" is a great ad. The other two, eh. But they're all better than the English ones.

  • I tend to agree. Domino is clearly the best of the bunch...and it's not really an attack ad - it's grounded in policy rather than puppets and goofy pictures.

  • The domino ad is the best one yet, as good as the Liberal French ad from 2006.

  • For a party rolling in cash it's nice to see their low budget ads continue.
    That said, I like Domino too. V effective.
    It's time to respond.

  • Production values have gone up a bit, at least. "Domino" is good on a legitimate policy issue; the others, I'm not sure, although "Porte" is at least clever.

  • You guys have to run some ads to counter this. Oh, I forgot, when you can't get millions from the big companies, and no money from urban fatcats, you guys have no money.
    Now your bank account matches your morals. Not to worry, little Gritty Grits, we've got plenty of cash because tens of thousands of ordinary Canadians give us a hundred or two each. We'll keep ad sales brisk.

    WHAT!!! The Conservatives were accepting large amounts of cash in brown envelopes? They had secret accounts (probably for the distribution of cash to unnamed candidates in Quebec)? Seriously? They did that, or something that rose to that level of corruption?

    I thought not.

  • I like TV Vente, but my French stinks, and it is the one I understand the best. My favourite part is the sound effect that comes when you see Dion towards the end.

    I don't believe the post spoke to levels, simply to the existence of it.

    Anyway, I disagree that we should be running ads. We get enough of that during election time, and I'd rather let the Tories continue down the lonely road of desperate televised mudslinging.

  • Alright, even I who prefer policy discussion to cheap theatrics have to agree that the domino ad is pretty damned good - very dramatic and effective, and a LOT more bang for their bucks.

    The Porte one is good, and I agree that the TV one doesn't convey very much clearly. Still, these are indeed leagues better than the English ads, no doubt.

  • To the surprise of some, Yes Virginia the Conservatives did take money in brown envelopes.

    For starters, Google Brian Mulroney Karl Heinz Schreiber.

    Four envelopes, each with $100,000 in them and that is just the tip of the iceberg . . . .

  • Having thought a moment - these ads are obviously far better produced, but I actually think the English ads were more effective than Porte or TV.

    Nothing can touch the Domino ad, though - that one is pretty slick.

  • erThe Conservatives have consistently run folksy no-budget English ads (remember the lame interview ads, or the ones showcasing the Tory frontbench from summer '05, where they referred to each other by first name).

    This may be because the swing voters in the respective provinces are different. Perhaps they have bet that folks in Quebec are more visual, and have a better sense of humor than Ontario soccer moms.

    My favorite ad nonetheless remains the Jack-attack one where they showed people with a moustache saying they supported NDP-ish things like legalization of drugs.

  • These ads are a lot better... and, at this point, the Liberals don't have much choice but to respond in kind, in which case, I don't see how we're going to avoid an extra-early election.

  • Enjoyed all the ads to be honest. I don't know a lot about Dion but then I'm probably in the majority there - in which case the ads will probably be effective. I just heard him speaking english and for my money if the Conservatives want to damage him in english Canada they should just let him speak.
