Oops

I guess this won't land Steve in the slammer and it is an honest mistake, but it's hard not to get slightly amused at the Tories finally admitting they broke election finance laws and that Harper himself went over his donation limit in 2005:

OTTAWA (CP) - After months of heated denials, the federal Conservative party has quietly admitted it failed to publicly disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of donations.

And the muddle over the disclosure meant that at least three party members - including Prime Minister Stephen Harper - donated more than the legal limit last year.

Last Thursday, the party filed a revised financial report for 2005 with Elections Canada, acknowledging that it did not report delegate fees collected for its national convention that year as donations, contrary to political financing laws.

In their defense, it is impossibly hard for political parties to find a lawyer in their ranks to read over these laws...

Ok, Conservatives have come clean and will likely make amends.

Now shifting focus to Liberal integrity. [ This is your topic, remember ].

There are several outstanding amounts not yet repaid to Canadian voters.

There are questions about deceased personas supporting Liberal candidates at the recent convention.

There are lists of 200 or more diversions of Canadian revenues to Liberal causes.

Too cruel to continue so I suggest pointing at minimal money errors on the part of other parties is something Liberals may be wise to avaoid. = TG

    ========== Liberal activist.

Not a debater or beacon of reason, and not much of a credit to the Liberal Party of Canada.

Similar to the types who closed down Andrew Cayne*s site last year. = TG

  • Merry Christmas to Calgary Grit, who has been very tolerant of some of my *difficult* comments.

The Liberal Party is home to a majority of good people and I prefer that the best be recognized in the Liberal enclave.

Here*s hoping the party can stay well ahead of the NDP.

Merry Christmas to all GOOD Liberals. = TG

The Conservative Party is home to a majority of good people. Here's hoping the party can stay even with the Natural Law Party.

  • Wow those bastard CPC's.... not filing their taxes properly! The Liberal party would NEVER tolerate any mis-filings like that or stealing from the Canadian taxpayer...

wait a second.. where's that 40+ million dollars from Ad-scam??? Oh right.... "OOPS"

  • I wrote here months ago that I think that this is the wrong interpretation - if a political party LOSES money on a convention, then how can the fees to attend be considered a donation! The forms themselves are setup to declare a per person profit or loss on a convention! At a fundraising event, if your fixed costs exceed your ticket price, then there is no donation - but apparently this doesn't follow for Conventions.

So yes, I guess Elections Canada has sided against the CPC - it is still the wrong decision (regardless of political affiliation), and were the Liberals in this position, I would be arguing just as loudly that it was the wrong decision.

  • willblog:

    Stop defending the indefensible.

Either the convention fees are going to pay for the convention itself (in the absence of profit) or for the convention AND some other thing that the party wants to spend money on. Either way, it's money that the party gets to spend, and from which the party benefits.

Or are you suggesting that the only reason conservatives have a convention is to raise money?

  • I wonder why the Tories are waving the white flag. A straight-up reading of the Elections Act makes their position quite arguable, if not a sure thing.
