Quick Fix

I'll have lots of recap from the LPCA convention later but for now, I'll just say this:

Convention highlight: Joe Volpe mentions Fort McMurtry.

Also, there's extensive coverage on Gauntlet.ca, and I'm sure Nicole Martel will have something up in the near future.

In other leadership news, you can read this piece on the one candidate who did not show up in Edmonton this weekend.

  • Didn't Ignatieff say something about "assimilation policies"?

  • So Calgary Grit,

Now that you have met your Jesus Christ figure "Gerrard Kennedy" himself in person is he as wicked awsome cool as you have been saying in your blog for the past two months?

I'm sick you using your blog to slag off against Joe Volpe, when Volpe has done more good for the Liberal Party of Canada than this johnny come lately in Kennedy has ever done.

Volpe had a good weekend in Alberta and will have more support in the province than Kennedy can ever dream of.

  • I'll have a few good things to say about Volpe in the full recap - his french was really good, for starters.

But every single person I talked too found the Fort McMurtry line funny.

  • Uh Oh CG,

Looks like Toronto Liberal is mad about your blog.. Ooooooh scary. hah It's YOUR blog and you can say what you want, when you want. No one is forcing Toronto Liberal to read this so HE can slag off.

Second, the whole Ashley McIsaac thing is hilarious...just hilarious. The man clearly is out to lunch. It's just one big publicity stunt for him.

  • "his french was really good, for starters."

You know CalgaryGrit, everytime you say something like that, you are making the case of that guy in the Belinda postings that there are two classes of people, those who can speak French and those that can't.

Aren't there any other qualities we can judge people on ? Please ?
Other than language ? Please ! What happened to our party ?

  • I'm still going to assume that any positive Volpe related blog comment is posted by Volpe himself. Or maybe his Mom...but I hear his Mom is a Dryden supporter.

  • Oh dear, the leadership infighting has begun.

Dance, puppets, dance. Toronto Liberal, you're doing the Conservative Party a huge service by a) coming on here and slagging one of the most respectable Liberal bloggers out there and b) supporting Joe Volpe.

Now that the former minister of complex files has withdrawn, the tories best hope is the grandstanding sleazy politician (Volpe), the failed former NDP premier who only bought his liberal membership a few days ago (Rae), or the academic with no political experience who is more pro-Bush than any Tory in this country (Ignatieff).

Even though I did vote Tory last election, I do hope for a credible Liberal Party so that there are two decent options to choose from. Please pick someone competent like Dion or Kenneday, not any of the touristsor megalomaniacs.

    Matt

  • I'm guessing about half of these comments are satirical. Maybe all of them.

I thought Carolyn Bennett and John Godfrey, of the marginal candidates(i.e., the ones we've defined, more or less arbitrarily, as marginal) did their causes the most good in Edmonton. I thought Martha Hall Findlay showed poise but went way too far with the self-deprecating-humour thing.

Rae and Ignatieff were very poised. Dion and Godfrey on one hand, and McCallum and Bevilacqua on the other, have such similar discourses that it dulls the impact of what they're saying. One member of each pair must hope the other one drops out soonish.

Volpe and Bennett and Hedy Fry struck me as narcissistic candidates, a word that's too strongly pejorative for what I mean to say: they're all running on the management structure and philosophy of the Liberal party, rather than on any governing project for the country. "Respect the grass roots" is very charming, but it has little to do with any Canadian who's not a lifer in the Liberal caucus.

Joe Fontana shows promise as a motivational speaker.

  • And here comes Paul Wells to join the underestimation of Joe Volpe.

Volpe is going to surprise so many smug Liberals and the media as well.

He has the organization to go along way.

  • Bennett's a nut job. Anybody that has actually seen her more than a couple of times knows she is a hypocrite in the first degree. The garbage about "grassroots" democracy, the "bottom up" approach... her stuff about the need to involve everyone... please. You should see all the people she has alienated over the course of her political career. The woman's a joke.

  • I agree with Manitoba, Toronto Liberal MUST be Volpe.

It's the whole "I'm going to beat you all" attitude that shines through his comments that makes it an absolute certainty Toronto Liberal is Volpe! hah

Also I agree with Paul Wells, Fontanna should have his own talk show at the very least. Hilarious to the bitter end.

And no one is commenting on Paul Zed? Friday, Ignatieff says Paul Zed is his supporter... then Saturday we see Paul Zed on the stand as a possible leadership contender? What gives?

Finally, Paul Wells get your blog up and running again. It's boring withour your comments each day! *Ok I get that I'm a nerd for saying that*

  • As a conservative voter in most elections, I must say that if either Joe Volpe or Hedy Fry become leader, the Liberal party would collapse completely in the next election. Volpe is smug, arrogant, shady,.... everything the Libs should be trying to rid themselves of. Fry is just a joke to put it nicely. Of the current lot, I would recommend Dion, or maybe Kennedy[although I dont know alot about him], or possibly Iggy[theres something about him I don't like]. In all honesty, I hope you guys can get your shit together soon, as we all know what can happen when a government is given too many years in power with no viable alternative.

  • Toronto Liberal and Calgary Grit provide an excellent study in contrasts. One lacks all objectivity, makes absurd claims without supporting evidence, denigrates those who do not share his view, and has no understanding of Canadian views beyond the 905. The other…uh…doesn’t.

As an outside observer, it’s pretty clear where the future of the party lies. It ain’t with Volpe.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:56 a.m.

  • Is it true that you had an interview with Iggy?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:01 a.m.

  • Toronto Liberal, Joe Volpe would have more success as a panhandler in Alberta than as a Liberal leader.

Have you forgotten the "KKK" Krap he pulled over the Libranos poster?

    We haven't.

By Blogger Candace, at 3:51 a.m.

  • Having seen Kennedy being interviewed by Don Newman, I don't see what all the fuss is about. I'm sure someone will talk to him about putting his hand on his chin when he talks, right? There's no one in that crowd that will have the Conservatives worried. The guys who have dropped out from the start-McKenna,Tobin etc.-were much more credible.
If the Liberals are out of power after the next election, how long will the new leader be safe in the job?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:37 a.m.

  • I like what Rick said above.

Iggy seems like a front runner and I have seen him more in the Media lately. Something Kennedy will have to do more of. Nation wide media, that is.

Liberals are in a state of flux. It's a credit that infighting is fairly low key.

To keep your computer open to Calgary Grit...consider this..

*This is one of those big, under-the-radar threats that we've been concerned about,* said Ken Dunham, director of the rapid response team at VeriSign's iDefense unit. *There has been a trend away from big-bang attacks to very targeted and sophisticated attacks that take place right under your nose. This is one of them.*
