The No Spin Zone

David Emerson has back tracked from comments he made referring to Harper as a "hard ass".

"I probably did say he was a hard-ass. It was meant as a compliment, not a criticism. If I call you a hard-ass I think you're a pretty solid guy and you've got grit. If I call you a soft-ass or a candy-ass then I'm criticizing you," Emerson said.

And people say David Emerson isn't a politician? That's the best darn spin I've heard in years.

I think Emerson may be on to something. Just think about how other politicians could have used Emerson's "it was a compliment" defense to their advantage in the past:

When the Tory war room called Dalton McGuinty a reptillian kitten eater":
They should have explained things like this: "Reptiles are some of the most evolved, powerful creatures in this world. They say a tortoise never forgets, and the crocodile is a fierce predator."

When Joe Volpe called the Conservatives Klansmen last year:
"I meant it as a compliment. A clan is a group of individuals united by kinship and descent. I was merely commenting on the bind which draws Tories together and how unified they appear to be as a caucus."

When Scott Reid said that "Alberta can blow" me during the election:
"Look, would I ask anyone to blow me? It's obviously a sign that I think very highly of Albertans and the skill set they posses."

  • man o man...you're hilarious....
but you're so correct man. I think we may see a lot of this style of things coming out. KUDOS for having pointed it out. And about this guy not being political...that's true....that's the best darn spin I've seen in year.

  • I seem to recall all the Tory trolls saying that the Liberals had made up this story about Emerson.

    What now trolls?

  • So we're all agreed Emerson spin of his own comments is cleverer than the torque job by Bill Graham's spear carrier?

Clearly he misses interminable meetings filled with quality blackberry time:

"I commented on the fact that cabinet meetings are much more focused, much more business-like."

  • The odd thing about Emerson is that it is not clear if he reflects poorly (or well, as one prefers) on the Conservatives or on the Liberals, just as it is not clear if Rae reflects poorly (or well) on the Liberals or on the NDP. But presumably the default assumption is that whoever accepted em last is responsible for em.

  • Is it just me or is Emerson single handedly turning this government into a complete joke?

  • Emerson was right when he said he's be Stephen Harper's worst nightmare.

No, it's just you. Many Conservatives are turning this government into a complete joke.

  • Or when Jean Cretien or is it Critten or something? I have forgotten.

Didn't he once say,"Da proof is a proof, and if da proof is da prooof then a proof...."

What he really said was, "Da have no idea what I am talking aboot".

Lots of people want this story to be true. Conservatives who are pissed at Harper wooing him want him out, and hope he doesn't enjoy himself. Liberals that are pissed with his leaving want him to regret it.

    Spite. That's what you're missing.

Great sign for our political maturity in this country, hey?

  • I think Emerson must be confusing 'hardass'with 'hardcore'.It's an easy mistake.

He meant to say, "Harper is so hardcore."

  • Lol.. that was hilarious CG .. you just made my day.

  • The fact is Stephen Harper is a hard ass and nobody will kick him around...isn't that better than Paul Martin (remember him) the guy who promised everything to everybody and never did a god damn thing. Harper will get things done and he will win a majority because he is a hard ass and "will ger things done"

  • Silly political junkies.

Average Canadians care about their taxes, their security, their children ect.

They don't give a rats ass about this Emerson thing (as evidenced by the fact that the CPC's numbers have been rising even in BC).

Next year, when an election is called, the GST will have been lowered (likely middle income taxes), parents start getting their monthly childcare checks, and the most sweeping accountability legislation ever is passed,

I'm sure the voters will look back and say " what about that floor crossing thing...no not Brison, not Stronach, that other one...Emerson, yeah, we must vote in the Liberals again."

Liberals are savoring this Emerson thing like a starving man scraping a bare chicken bone for one last tiny morsel.

Course, it is fun to watch.

Every little bit helps. The more unethical, hypocritical and autocratic Harper looks, the easier he will go down in the next election.

Once a negative perception is established it is very hard to get rid of and eventually polls will reflect that.

    Just ask Paul Martin.

  • "Once a negative perception is established it is very hard to get rid of... Just ask Paul Martin."

That's exactly right, Anonymous 7:57am, which is why Harper is acting as though he's invincible right now - because he is.

Harper knows he can do almost anything and get away with it because the liberals, for the reasons you just pointed out, are going to loose even more seats the next election

    Just a guy...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:34 p.m.

  • Sigh...

You guys just don't get it.

It is too early to predict who will win more seats in the next election.

The way you Tories are acting, it's like you won a majority last election. Just a reminder, you didn't, and you are only governing with the support of the seperatists.

Harper has been getting alot of negative press, you may not want to believe it, but eventually it will have a negative effect on his numbers. It always has, it always will.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:46 p.m.

  • CG you deserve credit for a great sense of humour.

I beg to differ that the CPC is only governing with the support of the separatists.

I had lunch with a couple of Bloc MPs today. I did not get the sense that the Bloc is happy "supporting" the CPC. Rather the Bloc is deeply afraid of an election in which they would lose seats to the CPC.

Outside of Montreal and the west island, the race in Quebec in the next election is most likely going to be one between the Bloc and the CPC than between the Libs and Bloc. This means that without a new leader who can restore the Libs popularity in Quebec, the CPC will enter the next election with the same type of seat advantage that the Libs used to enjoy. This can only be good news for HArper and is probably why he is acting in such a confident manner.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:11 p.m.

  • Whether the separatists are happy supporting him does not change the facts.

Again it is too soon to know what is going to happen next election, for god sake the Libs haven’t even chosen a leader yet. That’s probably going to have one of the biggest impacts on what seats are won or lost in the next election.

Sheesh, this is like having an argument with a child...
