Hello Ruby Tuesday

I had this e-mail regarding to the upcoming LPCA convention in Edmonton forwarded to me from a friend.

To date, the following potential leadership candidates have confirmed their attendance at the LPCA Convention (all will be given an opportunity to speak to the delegates):

1. Ms. Martha Hall Findlay
2. Hon. Belinda Stronach, MP
3. Hon. Stephane Dion, MP
4. Hon. Joe Volpe, MP
5. Hon. Scott Brison, MP
6. Dr. Ruby Dhalla, MP
7. Mr. Michael Ignatieff, MP
8. Minister Gerard Kennedy
9. Hon. Ken Dryden may also
attend.

In addition, The Hon. Bill Graham has been invited to be the keynote speaker at the Saturday banquet.

Not a ton of surprises in the list, with the exception of Ruby Dhalla, who most people had assumed wouldn't run.

  • Ruby's going to run. She'll make a lovely addition to the field. A very bright lady with a brilliant future. The experiance will bode well for her.

  • Ruby and Belinda will split the beauty vote allowing the old codger vote to run up the middle. The Conservatives will then make Rona leader in order to scoop up the alienated Ruby and Belinda vote. You heard it here first!

  • I have to confess complete confusion even what little hype there is surrounding Ruby. She was parachuted into a riding (where she didn't have a hope of winning the nomination) by the wise sages of the Martin regime and has done something between little and nothing to distinguish herself since.

In her defense, she hasn't had much time. But she comes in with pretty weak democratic credentials, and not much on the resume beyond the semi-fraudulent "Dr." designation (she is a chiropractor).

Is anyone sure that she takes all the delegates from her own riding?

  • Isn't Ignatieff a PhD? Where's his title?

  • While it's great to see so much positive interest in the leadership race, it isn't the time to "gain experience" by the inexperienced. It's a time for the experienced and highly competent to shine and make for a meaningful race. With such a possible crowded field, I suggest that "lovely" additions and fringe types take a reality check and work hard in their current political roles to gain experience for the future.

  • I know Ruby personally, and Don I can tell you, it is all complete bullshit. Anon 7:01 is right on the money.

Her 'modelling' experience includes wearing her mother's sari's at a bridal show in Winnipeg. Her 'Dr.' designation comes from being a chiropractor (I'm not knocking Chiros, I just don't think they are Dr's). She is very full of herself and takes a lot of credit for things she had no invovlement in (hospital and passport office in Brampton). If she does run, she'd be the token candidate to attract the New Canadian vote but no one would take her seriously because, well, they'd be smart not to.

  • I know Ruby well and would not back her. She is not an ethical politician. First she is not a medical doctor, her office answers the phone as Dr.Dhalla's office. She addresses herself as Dr.Dhalla and I know thousands of Doctorates who simply calle dMr or Ms. but this chiropractor insists on being called a Dr.!

She did not win the nomination to get the seat, she was parachuted by Karl Littler to keep Andrew Kania from winning because Kania was the Campaign co chair for Manley.

She has never acted in any bollywood movie, she is an actress wanna be not an actress.

She has no respect in Brampton and she is known to betray friends for personal gains. She will lose in the next nomination meeting.

  • Not only is she only a chiropractor - she was educated in India at a school (or so I hear) that has considerably lower standards than Canadian Chiropractic schools.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:33 p.m.

  • Ignatieff has two Ph.D's and he doesn't call himself a Dr. thats clearly shows the difference between her and him.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:36 p.m.

  • She is from Winnipeg and not India. Someone from India cannot be dumb like her.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:38 p.m.

  • Well all that was certainly a proud comment on the virtues of anonymous posting. Cripes.

  • Young Liberals prez backing Scott Brison for party leadership

OTTAWA (CP)_ The president of the Young Liberals of Canada is throwing his support behind MP Scott Brison for the leadership of the party.

Richard Diamond said he met with most of the prospective candidates and decided to back the former public works minister_ and former Tory.

``He's always demonstrated that he's bright, capable and energetic, and I think he speaks to a generational change that is really need right now if we are to appeal to young voters,'' Diamond said.

Diamond's support is significant because the Young Liberals make up a strong voting bloc during leadership conventions. About one-third of all delegates come from student clubs across the country.

Diamond said he would lobby fellow young Liberals to support Brison, but his endorsement doesn't automatically signal the backing of other members.

Former prime minister Paul Martin's team was very adept at securing the vote of young Liberals, many of whom ended up working with him on Parliament Hill. But his team was also criticized for setting up ``paper clubs'' on university campuses_ clubs that only existed to send voting delegates to the convention.

Brison, and potential competitors Belinda Stronach and Ken Dryden will be trying to woo other young Liberals this weekend in Ottawa during the youth wing's executive meeting.

Diamond said Brison's relatively short history with the Liberals should not be a deterrent. Brison was a Progressive Conservative MP until 2003.

``His vision is much more Liberal than many members of our own caucus,''
    Diamond said.

``In the time that he has been a member, he had demonstrated the he is a true liberal. He believes in prosperity and that should be balanced with a social conscience and a progressive social agenda.''

Brison has yet to formally announce he is running for the leadership. To date, only businesswoman Martha Hall Findlay and MP John Godfrey have revealed their intentions.

Liberals will choose their leader on the weekend of Dec. 2-3.

  • Some media buzz for Kennedy today in the National Post.

Liberals talk of 'rekindling the innocence': Tribute to Sheila Copps: Loudest buzz reserved for Gerard Kennedy

TORONTO - About 400 members of the Liberal Party of Canada, including up to a dozen candidates for the leadership job, packed the ballroom at the King Edward Hotel last night for a tribute to Sheila Copps, the former deputy prime minister, which organizers said doubled as a healing session for the party.

"It's 'Hey guys, let's all get together and sing 'Kumbaya,'" explained Dan Donovan, an executive at Magna International and long-time Liberal Party insider. "It's a wonderful event."

The evening began with the piercing voices of the Nathaniel Dett Corale soaring in great gospel harmony above the hubbub in the crowded lobby: "Walk together children, don't you get weary," they sang. "There's a great camp meeting in the Promised Land."

With that, hundreds of Liberals -- who each paid $50 to get in -- trooped into the hotel's Sovereign Ballroom and stood, sipping beer and wine, and listened to a long and emotional speech by Ms. Copps, heritage minister in the Chretien cabinet.

Ms. Copps, now a newspaper columnist, covered the arc of her 20 years in federal politics, recalling how she breast-fed her daughter in the lobby of the House of Commons.

She called on the Liberal Party to renew itself and "rekindle that innocence."

"Canadians need to feel that politics is a noble place," she said.

The event doubled as a coming-out party for Liberal leadership candidates.

Several members of Paul Martin's last cabinet, including MPs Ken Dryden and Stephane Dion, showed up. Bob Rae, the former NDP premier who is toying with a run at the leadership, appeared, plus Toronto Liberal MPs Carolyn Bennett and Michael Ignatieff.

But one of the loudest buzzes in the room last night was reserved for Gerard Kennedy, the former food bank worker who is Minister of Education in Ontario.

"He's young, he represents renewal," said Sean McDonald, a former Liberal staffer who runs the blog liberalleadershipodds.com.

Mr. Kennedy "came from Alberta," Mr. McDonald said. "He's perfectly bilingual. He's brown-haired, not grey-haired."

Mr. Kennedy promised last night to decide soon whether to jump into the race. If he does run, he plans to call for major change in the party.

"There has to be a fundamental reform of the party," he said. "It needs to be a much more open party.

"The success of the party caused it to be cloistered. It missed the beat in terms of connecting to people. We need to roll up our sleeves and look at the way the party works."

Mr. Kennedy praised the event as, "another non-linear event by Dennis Mills. There is nothing particularly logical about it," he said.

But he called it a good chance to heal old wounds. "People are here from every one of the former factions," he said.

Notable by their absence last night were Belinda Stronach, the Liberal MP for Newmarket, and Jean Chretien, for whom Ms. Copps was a staunch ally. Aline Chretien, the former prime minister's wife, stood in for Mr. Chretien, explaining that he is in China.

"Jean thinks she was one of his best ministers," Ms. Chretien said of Ms. Copps.

Dennis Mills, the former Liberal MP who is now an executive at Magna Corp., was beaming last night at the success of the event, which he threw together on short notice.

"Wasn't that a nice peaceful evening?" he asked a guest as they departed.

  • Question, since we are being picky about Ruby and the DR thing.
Why then is it okay for Kennedy to refer to himself and for his people to refer to him as being educated at Trent and the U of A when as I understand he did not graduate from either school. Is this not resume padding?
I am sure that missisaugapeter will correct me if I am wrong but I have been led to believe by credible sources that he did not in fact Graduate from either school. The not graduating is not an issue the attempt to imply that he did is?
    Is it true?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:44 p.m.

The most recent Ontario provincial election had its share of Trent alumni candidates : Gerard Kennedy '77 was elected for the Liberals in Parkdale High Park, Adrian Heaps '72 ran for the Liberals in Scarborough southwest, Bruce Abel '64 ran for the NDP in Guelph, Chris Hodgson '81 was elected for the Conservatives in Victoria/ Haliburton/Brock, Jeff Leal '74 ran for the Liberals in Peterborough and Paul Davidson '83 ran for the Liberals in Don Valley West.

Looks like he has at least one degree to me.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:41 p.m.

  • I think Ruby is a great person, but I will agree that the whole Dr thing is a annoying and false since she got a degree in chiropractics from some random school in India.

As for Diamond going with Brison, I wonder how Reg Alcock his former boss and the person that got him elected Prez is feeling now?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:45 p.m.

  • Well according to his former campaign manager he has no degrees.
I would really like a clarification on this. The way his official bio reads it says that he was educated at and that he studied Political science and economics but it really skates around the degree issue making me think there is some truth here. Why is the official bio so fuzzy?
Remember how Kim Campbell got ripped on the resume padding issue, that would be the last thing we need is tory bloggers and the media ripping us on resume padding

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:08 p.m.

  • Anonymous at 12:08pm,

Kennedy's bio is completely accurate. There is no padding and nothing fuzzy about it. You are obviously supporting another candidate and hoping to find a way to smear Kennedy. Yawn.

He studied and was educated at both universities as stated. I am an academic myself, and people study in programs at universities all the time without it being part of a degree. That is still part of their education. He doesn't claim anything else. He left U of A to become the executive director of Canada's first food bank, The Edmonton Food Bank, an incredible job offering for a 23 year old. The rest is history. He is an extremely intelligent individual.

There is no comparison between Dhalla and Kennedy. The only similarity they have is that they are both from Manitoba. He has 10 years of political experience, a top minister in the Ontario government and national support is building in his campaign. That is no embellishment, it is factual.

Licensed chiropractors do go by Dr. I do not see what the big deal is. If Ruby wants to be called Dr., fine by me.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:33 p.m.

  • Ruby Dhalla, for what its worth, has a better claim to call herself doctor than Dr. Colleen Klein.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:45 p.m.

  • Any update on Kennedy's visit to Calgary?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:44 p.m.

  • Ruby Dhalla was a young liberal & infact she's been a liberal since 80's. I think she will make a good leader :)
