Recall, Remove, Elect, Repeat

There's tons of David Emerson material around the net today:

TDH Strategies has been digging through Hansard to find some old Emerson quotes.

There's an online petition to recall Emerson (what is he? our ambassador?),

A blog to remove Emerson,

And a blog to elect Emerson (I could have sworn we just did that two weeks ago...).

You can also see a full run-down on bloggers reaction to Emerson here.

  • Conversations this morning have me thinking -- why is everyone so fired up about Emerson (as I am), but not about Fortier? Appointing your campaign co-chair to a powerful cabinet position? As a friend said this morning, it sounds kind of... Soviet.

  • Fortier would have gotten a lot more press if it wasn't for Emerson.

But, I'll agree, the Fortier think stinks too. Harper campaigned on an "elected Senate" promise. This is akin to Martin appointing Richard Mahoney to the Senate so that he could serve in Cabinet.

  • Just noticed the question about recall ("what is he, our ambassador?"). I'm not sure if the term is used federally, but BC provincial law allows constituents to recall an elected member if they get a petition with something like 40% of voters' signatures on it, asking to remove the MLA. This triggers a by-election.

  • I agree that Fortier stinks even more of utter hypocrisy. O'Connor - defence lobbyist now in charge of defence spending - and Vic "election fraud" Toews are not too far behind either. (By the way, there's another petition with lots of good Emerson quotes: http://emersonpetition.blogspot.com)

Chantal Hebert pointed out on CBC last night that because of all this controversy there has been little talk about how conservative the cabinet is with Flaherty in finance, Toews/Day tagteam in Justice/Safety.

  • Agreed that Fortier was a far greater act of stupidity. Appointing an unelected person to cabinet is dubious, but it's even more dubious when it's friggin' PUBLIC WORKS, and you've just brought down the Liberals on sponsorship issues.

  • Sorry guys and girls, I'll take competence and ability over hacks anytime. And for the great Emerson/Fortier lemming crowd out there, just tell me who is the CPC MP roster was equivalent? Ummh?

So if talent was needed, how was Harper going to get it, kiddies? Come on, how was he going to get it?

Or should Harper have kept to your "Principles" and stuffed a couple of posts with untrained, but well-meaning, MPs?

As I said, I'll take competence over mediocrity or unskilled labour any day, if it's in Canada's best interests and legal.

    So enough, eh?

  • Dingwall also has completly dropped off the radar, it is going to make it hard for the Cons to complain about any new Liberal scaldals as the Liberals will be able to say, well now thats an old govt, lets talk about your govt."
Normally new govts get 6 - 12 months where they can blame the old govt, Harper has cost himself that. The honeymoon was like a Britney one or something.
Hey Harper is like Britanny Spears, comes off all clean and virginal and then turns into a total tramp

  • Erik: If Harper wants competent MPs maybe he should get some competent candidates. If Fortier wanted to be in cabinet he should have run for a seat -- if he's so competent then he'd win. If Emerson wanted to be a Conservative he should bloody well have run as a Conservative, and let his constituents decide who they wanted. I'm pretty sure democracy involves something along the lines of people being able to choose who they want as their representatives, and party affiliation is an important part of that representation. If all we're worried about is competence, and voter input be damned, why bother with voting at all? We'd might as well just set up a dictatorship right now. At least the trains would run on time, eh?
