First The Tories Win...Now This...

Unbelievable. Canada loses 2-0 to Switzerland?!?!?

This would never have happened under a Liberal government...

  • Kelly Hrudey's comments were quite good. We'll win against the Fins.

BUT WE LOST IN CURLING TO THE ITALIANS!!! ARRRGGGGHHHH!!! (Sandra Schmirler spins in her grave!)

  • Dude,

NAGANO AND WORLD CUP 96 HAPPENED UNDER THE LIBERALS!!

Canada will probably still win this time around... although it wouldn't pain me much if they just barely lost.

A 3-peat would be tough to pull out (in 2010) and winning in Vancouver is much more important to me than winning in Turin.

  • Are you suggesting that they played to conservatively?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:00 p.m.

  • My prediction is that Canada will get either Silver or Bronze ... There are Waaaay too many good teams playing this year ... and the players are solid - ie. Finland. I wish they'd stop putting Brodeur in - might help us win Gold. Gerber was amazing today for the Swedes.

  • Canada simply didn't deserve the win today, just like the Liberals didn't deserve to win on Jan. 23. It's that simple. Now we have to hear hours of CBC's whining about the loss, which is fair when they spent every extra broadcast minute yesterday dumping all over the American women's hockey team for getting beat.

  • "Are you suggesting that they played to conservatively?"

The Great One and crew played it too conservatively. Why is Kris Draper on the team and Crosby not. Spezza, Crosby, Staal Phaneuf should be playing. Foote, St Louis, Draper and Doan not.

  • "Why is Kris Draper on the team and Crosby not."
    - Because Kris Draper is an experienced, consistent player, on the checking line. Crobsy is a center.

"Spezza, Crosby, Staal Phaneuf should be playing."
    - Again, they don't have the years to prove they're consistent. I don't think they've ever played in international tournaments!

"Foote, St Louis, Draper and Doan not."
Doan is anhilating, Draper is consistent, St. Louis is a perfect pairing for Lecalvier and Foote has years of consistency behind him.

    Gretzky who?!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:07 p.m.

  • Gretzky knows what he's doing and he wasn't conservative accross the board, take for example McCabe.

See what little experience does and little consistency: Minus 2 ... with no points.

    Need I say more?

  • Thanks Mr. Hockey.

  • I demand the Harper get Ken Dryden to switch over to the Tories and become Cabinet Minister responsible for Hockey and the greater Toronto region.

  • What CBC are you listening too? Can you give examples of this so called "dumping on".

They don't need to dump on the US women or the Canadian men. The events speak for themselves.

Personally, I didn't expect much from this Canadian team. I do not think the North American teams travel well.
Even though all the Euro NHL players also traveled, they are also, relatively speaking, at "home".

  • As a Torontonian, the answer is simple:

    Fire Pat Quinn.

    Nuff said.

  • What I really meant...

Apparently, Conservative government in Canada is bad for all North Americans.

The Slovak men beat the Americans 2-1.

The way things are going, I wouldn't pick Mexico for the World Cup.

    /Leafs suck

  • Bring back Pat Burns

  • Experience is given way too much credence, especially up front. Top forwards peak in terms of production around 21 to 26 years old. The fact that Yzerman was even being considered in the Fall is joke.

Draper has 4 goals! Never in a million years should he be on the team. Foote is past it. Doan is having a down year. He is not great defensively. He is the worst + - on Phoenix. Most important of all is that his physcial play is better suited to an NHL size rink. Yes St. Louis is 2 years removed from his MVP season. However his MVP season is looking more like one year thing. He is also on the smaller side to say the least.

  • I heard a rumour that John Reynolds helped broker Paul DiPietro's crossing the ocean to Switzerland in exchange for a spot on the national team.

  • Don't worry, CalgaryGrit, some of us got the joke. In fact, I spit my tea across the keyboard...

    :)

  • Draper's a good penalty killer, so I don't mind him being on the team overly.

But Smyth...Doan...even Bertuzzi for that matter...I'd personally rather see Staal and Spezza out there.

By Blogger calgarygrit, at 11:07 p.m.

  • They picked Todd Bertuzzi to represent Canadian values to the world. I celebrate the fiasco, and spit upon Gretzky's reputation.

With the premeditated mugger out there, they weren't representing CANADA. I'm glad that they lost.

  • Enough of this hero worship. When it comes to selecting Olympic teams, Gretzky and crew suck.

13 out of the top 30 scorers this year are Canadian. 5 made the team 8 did not.

    Not playing: Savard (72), Staal (76), Tanguay (66, Marleau (64), Spezza (59), Horcoff (58), Karyia (58), Cheecho (56)

    Gagne (63), Thornton (81), Heatly (71), Richards (60), Sakic (56)

4 out of the top 6 Canadian point getters are not on the team.

While I am on the subject of bashiing Gretzky and crew, Quinn is clearly getting out coached. He is past it.

Canada may still yet win, but it will be in spite of Gretzky and crew.

By Blogger Koby, at 5:49 p.m.

  • I was thinking that myself ... Quinn does look like he's getting out coached.

And don't forget, the top point getters aren't in the top whatever because they're amazing, but because they have good linematest too. So when selecting people for an Olympic team, you have to choose who'll be able to play together as well + the politic side of things + experience. It's not hero worship, just basic math.

  • Thats right the ref's, would all have been paid off long ago.
    Thats the liberal way,
    ...but...
I suspect the kickback required for said BRIBES was just a little too much..
