The Front Bench

CTV starts off on the Cabinet musings. Among their predictions which I'm fairly sure we'll see are MacKay to Justice, Lawrence Cannon as Deputy PM, and Monte Solberg as Foreign Affairs (which is going to make for very interesting blogging).

It's probably too early to speculate, with the Ontario and Quebec numbers up in the air, but I think it's safe to say that there will not be seven Alberta MPs in Cabinet.

  • Four cabinet ministers from Alberta. Plus the PM, that's still a heavy representation from our province.

The more I read about Solberg for Foreign Affairs, the more I'm convinced. Treasury

He and Rona Ambrose are the shoo-ins. Then Prentice and Ablonczy; Rajotte likely the odd man out.

Left out: Bob Mills, Ted Menzies, Rob Anders (darn!), Jaffer, Lee Richardson...

I had a bit more to say about this here:

What I'm curious: Where to put Stock? Methinks revenue.

  • Stock will make a great industry critic I think. Solberg will probably continue as finance critic. He's been a good critic despite not having any finance background. If Flaherty wins, he might be put in as finance critic just to move people around a bit.

    I love your post. :)

  • Cerberus: They're called Cabinet Ministers....haha

  • Cerberus; Talking about a Harper Cabinet and majority is what won it for us last time. I think all Liberals should be speculating on this. ;-)

In that case how about Byron for Indian Affairs.

We can have a cowboys and indians theme going on during meetings with native leaders.

Harper could even come to meetings wearing his leather vest.

  • The sleeper pick for a Harper Cabinet will be Niagara Falls MP (and current Opposition Whip), Rob Nicholson.

Look for him to land in Industry or Transport.

  • Is that "you don't have the gonads" guy still around? If so, he's be great in defence.

  • Belinda Stronach for Minister of Democratic Renewal.

  • Since when is the Industry minister 'less high profile' than the Foreign Affairs Minister?

By all accounts, Industry is what Martin wanted in 1993 - Chrétien gave him Finance because it was supposed to be the kiss of death.

  • Peter MacKay at Justice? Someone as been drinking the Kool-Aid.

Now don't get me wrong, I like Peter MacKay, he's a nice guy, even if he does have a habit of leaving women in his wake like candy wrappers. But has eveyone forgot his, let's say, eccentic behaviour while he was running the PC Party. Let's see?

Running from every controversial issue placed before him, including issues that were eminently defendable

    Deal with Orchard

    Deal with Harper

Treating his gfs like packages of peanuts

Justice is a heavy-lifting portfolio. It requires, among other things, "discretion", not exactly Peter's strong point. It also requires someone who can resist the temptation to talk whenever someone puts a microphone in his face. Again, not Peter's strength.

Remember the second day of the campaign? Peter went wildly off script. Why? Because Stephen knows better than to tell Peter anything he doesn't want to see in the papers the next day. Peter also dropped the ball by commenting on something that he wasn't the critic on (Vic Toews is the Justioce critic). Peter is the ScandalAndWaste critic.

Here's the deal. Peter used to be a crown prosecuter, although there was some minor controversy when he left (he had to sue the the NS Dept. of Justice). He's very good at cross-examination of gov't members. He's a law-and-order type. He's going to be the Minister of Public Security. He gets to hob-knob in Washington and he can't possibly screw it up any worse than Lawrence MacAulay and Wayne Easter did.

    Case closed.

  • I'm going to speculate rather prematurely as well. I think Solberg, Ambrose, and Prentice are all definately there. Ablonczy probably gets a cabinet position too to up the female representation in cabinet. I suspect Jaffer will also get perhaps a minor portfolio for some ethnic representation.

But this is all subject to seeing who wins and from where. If Harper doesn't reduce the size of cabinet Rajotte and Bob Mills are on the bubble as they've been excellent critics.

  • More than half the cabinet could be rookie MPs, because some quality people saw a wave coming and got onboard. But Harper will have to resist giving too much space to newcomers because that would be very upsetting to veterans.

  • You mean Shadow Cabinet right?

By Blogger Hishighness, at 7:38 a.m.

  • I think every person ought to read it.
