Paul Martin's Braintrust...

...has had a tough couple of months, eh? Herle, Reid, Duffy...now Mike Klander. I'm taking bets on how long it will be before Karl Littler does something incredibly stupid.

While it's not exactly shocking to see the Board mess up, there are two surprising things about this:

1. It wasn't Scott Feschuck's blog that got the Liberals in trouble.
2. Someone named Klander made fun of someone else's last name...in a somewhat racist way...ouch.

This may have been the best Christmas present Stephen Harper and Jack Layton could have asked for.

UPDATE: I was going to spend Boxing Day sifting through the archives to find the juiciest bits from Klander's slander, but Stephen Taylor has the "highlights" detailed here.

  • You know CG, you might want to tell your boys that the competition on revmod's gaffeometer is more like golf than football. Low score wins...

I also wasn't aware that Steven Harper's scary hidden agenda was to have aliens abduct Cheryl Gallant and Randy White and have them returned to earth in the bodies of senior Liberal strategists and communications directors. It's worked very well though.

As Patrick notes, that entire website is one ongoing gaffe, taking cruel and unnecessary shots at people. These are things that you don't even say to your best friend at 5am after a kegger. We are definitely going to go to town on this guy though. Should give the opposition parties very, very big bumps in all the Toronto ridings, since he's a very senior guy on the Ianno campaign. Say goodbye to Trinity Spadina! HAHAHAHA!

Speaking of which that's 2 ridings where senior execs have screwed up, along with Mr. Apotex in Oakville.

  • Hi Bart,

I'm 95% sure the Klander blog is a fraud. Look at the google cache page; compare the url searched and the url in the title.

Give this two days and it will blow up in someone's face (and not Klander's)

By Blogger buckets, at 1:11 a.m.

  • I believed it when I first read it, but now I'm not so sure. This hasn't been reported anywhere but Wells' blog. I realize that Christmas Day is the ultimate slow news day, but that still strikes me as a bit odd. It's also interesting that we haven't had a denial, though. I honestly don't know what to make of it.

By Blogger Idealistic Pragmatist, at 1:22 a.m.

  • Buckets, then why would Klander get so mad at a Toronto Star reporter after he was caught?

It's a conspiracy... or another Liberal was caught red handed.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:31 a.m.

  • And it will blow up in someone else's way.. a certain Paul Martin.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:32 a.m.

  • It's on Nealenews, though that's just a link to Paul Wells.

Wells also claims that Klander attacked a Toronto Star reporter who blew the whistle on the blog. If anyone reads that they could try and find a story.

This site links to klander from 04 and it seems to be a Liberal supporter http://wakelin.blogspot.com/2004_06_01_wakelin_archive.html

Using the blog search tool, you get an apology on the site from Thursday: http://search.blogger.com/?ui=blg&q=blogurl%3Ahttp://klander.blogspot.com/&scoring=d

As to the URL variance: he just didn't bother changing the hosting of the site but wanted to promote the website for his consulting business. It doesn't smell like a fraud and Paul Wells is a rather astute guy. We'll see more tomorrow and Tuesday.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:33 a.m.

  • It must be pretty sad to be a Liberal hack.. stuck in the war room on Christmas day and having to log onto blogs to defend Klander. Merry Christmas!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:34 a.m.

  • So if I have a webpage and call it "Microsoft.Com" but it's hosted at another URL then it's a fraud?

    Sure, that's a fraud.

But it's not a fraud if I run a site called Klander.Com and I also title a free Blogger site "Klander.Com".

UseYourBrain.Org before you chime in about fraud. Telling us Klander was abducted by aliens and had his brain replaced by Randy White is more believable.

    Merry Christmas SUCKERS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:37 a.m.

  • Patrick. Yes, google cache can show you that there used to be a blog at klander.blogspot.com.

But we don't know who set up that blog and when the postings were made.

In theory, it's a great trick, no? Set up a blog in someone elses name. Make them look like an ass-hole. Then do a screen capture. Then delete the blog.

I haven't seen the Toronto Star story you mention yet: there is nothing at their site.

By Blogger buckets, at 1:43 a.m.

  • Another confirmation..

    Hey Wakelin,

I've checked out your blog about three times now, and the valuable addition today was to learn that Klander has a blog. I perused that too. Good fun.

Main reason I looked you up, though, was to actually try to pose a work question over the weekend. Couldn't find a personal email for you though. Ah well.

Question pertains to whether there will be a redistribution mtg in Ottawa the week of Oct 3-7, as was last discussed on phone some time ago.

(I forgive you missing a rather uneventful conf call to do a little Katrina fundraiser dinner with genuine jambalaya and andouille sausage)

    Cheers,

who the hell is this Andrew Cameron character?

Could it possible be this guy:

Andrew Cameron joins LPC as Communications Officer. A bilingual Ottawan, he holds a Carleton University Journalism degree and started in politics as a Carleton-Leeds Parliamentary intern. An active member of the Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) and Ontario Liberal Party based in Ottawa South, he has worked locally on three federal and two provincial campaigns in a wide variety of leadership roles since 1996. Professionally, he has served in various government relations and communications capacities for the CRTC, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and the Canadian AIDS Society in Ottawa.

  • anon. No it's not against the law to call the blog whatever you want. But why would you call it this.

Face it. Blogspot is a simple place to create a quick blog. I could set up a fake (pick a name here).blogspot.com blog in 15 minutes.

And go look at his links. Is a top Liberal operative going to have as his links the Drudge Report and the Cato institute?

Finally, go to technorati and see if anyone in the life of this blog has ever linked to it. That's kind of odd for a blog that's supposed to be six to eight months old.

By Blogger buckets, at 1:47 a.m.

  • Or you can use your pea sized brain and not assume everything is a conspiracy.

Oh the sponsorship scandal, bunch of Bloc lies.. it's not true. Few months later, it's a rogue group of Liberal insiders.

Some idiot, for months has been posting idiot comments to his idiot public blog. He also created other stupid idiot blogs to link to the first idiot blog. Intertwine enough Liberanos up the ying yang. Yes, this is a brilliant way to embarass the Liberals. Almost as ingenius as a secret tape recording.. but sorry, Gremant isn't running this site. A certain idiot named Mike Klander.

Sorry, it is Christmas and you're not dreaming.

    This isn't Watergate... I'm not Woodward, but I can add 2 + 2.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:49 a.m.

  • Tell us something we don't know.

We know it's easily to create a public Blogger site. It takes work to post insulting posts for months and then be somehow surprised to see it used against yourself.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:57 a.m.

  • And Klander's linking to the Cato Institute is probably more of a reflection of the kind of Martin Liberals then being an "out" for him..

Sure it would be suspicious to have Shiela Copps link to the Cato Institute on her site, but from what we've seen from Martin & Co. it wouldn't be that out of place...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:03 a.m.

  • If the Blog is forgery, then the question of who built it arises. Would it the a Tory or a Liberal ?

If a Liberal tried to manufacture a story this way in order to get retraction and excuses some days later from media and opponents who amplify the story, then the party is busted because the Chow comparison would still come from a Liberal.

Would a Conservative do that ? Possible, but I think any sleazy guy who knows how to create appearances would not put links to the Cato Institute, Drudge, and NealeNews on a faked Liberal blog. MoveOn and TDH would have been better choices.

If the blog is forgery then it's botched work. I think Harper and the rest of the Tory gang should refrain from commenting the story and just let the media break the crusty details. Layton cannot possibly stay silent, that's just below the belt.

Strange things can happen, especially in politics, my hunch is that blog might have been created by Liberals still, but not necessarily by Klander. Conservatives are just too overchecked by media to entertain themselves with these tactics.

I may be wrong, but that's what came up to my mind reading the recent comments.

    Happy hollidays

  • Okay, we'll let this ferment.

See what happens in the morning.

But if we saw suspicious signs, we would post them. But I haven't see one thing other that would get my spidey senses to tingle.

Election Campaign unexpectedly restarts on Monday December 26, 2005.

Sorry, all the Liberanos will have to take more sick/vacation time to pile back into the war room.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:09 a.m.

  • Patrick. It would not be difficult to pull something like this off.

I think a person would have to be pretty stupid to try it, frankly. If you got caught there'd be a defamation suit that could be ruinous.

But I'm not going to argue about this, since within 48 hours or so we'll know.

Enjoy! (But remember, the bigger the blow up now, the bigger the backlash when it becomes clear that this is a fraud.)

    Good night all!

By Blogger buckets, at 2:14 a.m.

  • If Reid can say "beer and popcorn" on national television, then imagine what kind of chit chat they do behind closed doors?

Well, we get a small glimpse of it through this blog.

You say to yourself, no one can be this stupid. But then also consider the next time you use a lawnmower that for some reason it has a warning you not to stick your hand near the blade when running.

  • One more point..

    BUCKET says:

"And go look at his links. Is a top Liberal operative going to have as his links the Drudge Report and the Cato institute?"

Klander links to the Drudge Report on his official site. A TOP LIBERAL OPERATIVE DOES HAVE LINKS TO THE DRUDGE REPORT ON HIS SITE.

    http://www.mikeklander.com/links.html

What is that saying? GAME, SET, MATCH?

He also links to a site called MyChoice.Ca which looks like it's a promo for Imperial Tobacco.

It just matches the rhetoric on his blog:

  • I'm surprised anyone is claiming the Klander blog is a fraud.

Klander's blog links to that of Chris Wakelin.

Wakelin himself blogrolls Klander's blog under 'Sites I check every day,' saying of his Liberal friend, 'By his bitching, you would think he is 65, or a Tory.'

In one post, Wakelin refers to fellow blogger Klander as his 'good friend,' and endorses his run for the VP position with the federal Liberal party in Ontario.

Would those questioning the Klander blog's authenticity like us to believe the Wakelin blog is part of the same conspiracy?

By Blogger Stephen, at 3:14 a.m.

  • This will only be a gift for the Tories if it gets outside the very small group of bloggers and blog readers and into the mainstream press. Even _if_ it gets the attention of Newman or CPAC, it won't make a dent unless it is on 'The National' or the CTV news.

There was no racism or sexism on the blog, Bart.

By Blogger Robert McClelland, at 9:18 a.m.

  • I withdraw my initial scepticism.

From The Toronto Star, December 23, 2005 Friday ( Pg. A06): Federal New Democrats are mad about a blog posting by an Ontario Liberal organizer comparing NDP candidate Olivia Chow to a dog.

The web page, operated by Mike Klander, showed a picture of Chow, wife of NDP Leader Jack Layton, and below it a picture of a "Chow Chow" dog with the caption "Separated at Birth." In fact, the dog resembles a Pekingese, which had some New Democrats crying racism. The blog was removed soon after the Star contacted senior Liberals seeking comment.

"I further understand he (Klander) has apologized. Those were, in my view, the appropriate actions," said Steve MacKinnon, executive director of the Liberal Party.

Chow said she was "saddened" by the swipe: "I'll debate policy anytime but to descend to this level is quite disappointing.

By Blogger buckets, at 9:27 a.m.

Went away from the campaign, we were in Bedford Falls, and came back to Pottersvile.

The transformation is amazing. We have Klander making Reid seem sensitive to the needs of parents. S. Copps is givng advice to CPC candidates, and in today's National Post Thomas Axworthy lavishing praise upon Ronald Reagan.

Next thing you'll tell me is that the CPC actually have a fighting chance at winning this thing. (nah, we can always snatch defeat from the jaws of Victory)

  • I don't think this will have any long term impact on the campaign, because the fellow has resigned and apologized.

When Conservatives make mistakes like this, they typically don't resign and they don't apologize. Look at for example Grewal not resigning-or Harper not apologizing for his gaffe about child porn in the last election.

The media, like all fair minded people, do not like when people don't apologize. This is the whole point. The media tends to move on from there.

The Liberal Party had planned to use the next three weeks to attack HArper personally. Klandergate will make it more difficult to adopt this strategy.

  • Whatever happens with the Liberals, Martin's entire staff should be fired for gross incompetence. They simply do not know what they are doing. They apparently want to go negative, but they still have not quoted Harper calling Canada “second tier”, “second rate”, “smug” and “resentful”. They still have not quoted Harper saying that whether Canada survives is “secondary”.

The only ones not to realize their true talent ahead of time seem to be Martin and various Canwest knuckle heads; unable to countenance the fact that most Canadians just do not like Harper or his policies, the Vancouver Sun ran a series of articles back in October and November about what evil geniuses the beer and popcorn boys are.

You would think that having being hopelessly wrong about how Canadians felt/feel about Bush, Harper, Iraq and BMD that Canwest would clean house and bring in fresh faces. Anyway, I digress.

  • The Liberals staying near 40% in the polls after Adscam proved that almost half of our fellow citizens don't mind being governed by organized criminals.

I guess we'll find out now if Canadians have anything against being governed by racists.

For those who would excuse Klander's 'Chow' post as immature wordplay, I disagree. What he did is equivalent to posting a picture of a black person beside a gorilla under the 'Separated at Birth' banner. There's no difference.

The media is in full spin mode, putting Klander's posts in the category of "negative advertising". How innocent. How convenient.

And for anyone who would stand up for this lowlife, look into your heart and ask yourself what your reaction would be if this bile came from a Conservative. Would you defend this behaviour then? I didn't think so.

Sticking with the Liberals' friends (i.e the MSM), I almost choked on my turkey leftovers last night when Mortimer Duke (aka Craig Oliver) came on to discuss John Gomery being named as Canada's Newsmaker of the Year.

Oliver said that Gomery's report 'denied Canadians the benefit of having a majority government' and that Gomery is responsible for 'enraging Quebeckers and bringing the separatist movement from the fringe to the verge of victory'

Talk about 'effed' up logic. To hear this senile old bastard tell it, the Libranos had nothing to do with it. It's all Gomery's fault. According to Mortimer, it sounds like Martin should sue Gomery for defamation.

One of Oliver's family members should hide his car keys before he turns into a total loon like Cronkite, in front of our eyes.

  • Klander did work on the leadership campaign of Copps back in 1990, then he came back on orders by Martin to kick her out.

  • Copps, TorSun:

Klander, the son of hard-working immgirant steelworker parents in Hamilton, rose to great heights in the Liberal party by working hard to fit in. In the Martin backrooms, fitting in tends to mean "old boy" and bathroom humour, and ensuring your place is secured by tearing others down.

I remember when, as a young high school student, he came into my office interested in knowing more about the Liberal party. His father was a diehard New Democrat, but Mike thought the Liberal Party might be a more realisitic way to help people. As a young man, he wanted to get involved to make things better. Over the years, it became simply about the win. My last images of Klander involve him working against me (and for the Martin/Tony Valeri side) in the ugly battle over the Liberal nomination in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek last year.

  • Klander and his other brother Klander? A tale of two photos.

    I. Holocaust memorial photo on the Klander blog

Klander Blog, May 20 (archived at http://tinyurl.com/ba2wc):

"Yes indeed, politics does make for strange bedfellows...but is there more to it? I would bet that his wife couldn't make his eyes roll back into his head like that".

    Toronto Star, December 26:

"Klander was a volunteer and did not play an official role for the Liberals during this campaign, Heckbert said, adding he's apologized to Chow".

    ----------------------------

II. Holocaust memorial photo used by the Liberal campaign

    Globe and Mail, December 23:

"The anti-Harper messages were prepared by a volunteer in Ontario and approved in the spring by the Liberal Party of Canada, said Liberal spokeswoman Amy Butcher...Ms. Butcher said the anonymous volunteer who prepared the material has not been taken to task".

    ----------------------------

Then again maybe the volunteer was a Lib-O VP and got fired a few days later when he got busted for the second time in a week?

  • AS OF DEC. 24, 2005 IPSOS-REID POLL

After a week following the debates, the survey shows that if a federal election were held tomorrow, 33% of voters would cast their ballot in support of the Liberals (-3 points), 32% would support the Conservatives (+5 points), 16% would support the NDP (-1 point) and 5% would support the Green Party (unchanged).
In Quebec, the Bloc Quebecois (54%, -2 points) have a 30-point lead over the Liberals (24%, -1 point).

Further, as it would appear that the federal vote race in Ontario has tightened (40% Liberals vs. 38% Conservatives), if a vote were held tomorrow, a Conservative led minority government would be the probable outcome.

Ha... thanks for the memory Klander, bring on the buffet, Mr. Reid. Don't know bout you guys, but I'm not reading a whole lot into the polls. This one, and the others, were so far off base the last election, that they have zero credibility... but it's nice to see one swinging the other way for a change.
