Thursday Evening Election Speculation

It seems a day doesn't go by anymore without a few new twists and turns. Among today's developments:

1. The Conservatives will use their opposition day to introduce a motion calling on the House to re-resume on January 4th, on an opposition day. I think most people can figure out what they'd use that opposition day for.

I'm not sure how this really differs from Layton's proposal, but it should give them some extra amo to launch Martin's way when it comes time to blame someone for a Christmas campaign.

2. Monte Solberg is trying to block Ralph Goodale from delivering his mini-budget to the Finance committee. I know Ralph is boring, but this seems a little excessive to me.

This is a fairly pointless stunt since Goodale will just deliver his update from across the street to reporters if he's blocked from doing so in committee. And it makes the Tories look somewhat petty.

3. Paul Martin says he won't "play politics". Riiiiight.

4. Listening to Bill Blaikie on Politics today made it sound like the opposition parties will simply use their next free opposition day after the 24th to bring down the government if the Liberals refuse to accept Layton's compromise.

5. These guys sure do make an interesting foursome, eh?

  • Watch PMPM speach today on CPAC. He sure is the man with the ideas eh? I didn't send our troops to Iraq, the Liberals will defend Medicare to the last, Stephen Harper will eat your baby kittens, blah blah blah...

Lets get rid of him now!!!!!! I can take a 1/2 hr on Christmas eve to throw these clowns out.

I will keep that in mind, we have a 5 ton truck at our disposal and about a dozen volunteers that will roll up to 24 Sussex the night Uncle Pauly loses, our plan is to get him on the first plane to Bermuda where he can live on one of his floating tax free palaces.

  • This is nuts. The opposition is sitting with their foot on the Liberal's throat and are goofing around with a bunch of wacky motions instead of finishing the job. The last time they pissed around instead of closing the deal we got gay marriage and the time before that they got Belinda Stronach.

They really have to pull the trigger. In two weeks we'll all be shaking our heads about how those craft Liberals somehow outmaneuvred the opposition again.

  • Harper needs a backbone. He is the opposition leader and he needs to act like it.

  • No, no you've got it wrong. He IS acting like an oppostion leader, one who wants to stay there indefinitely.

What he needs to do is actually act like he's capable of being PM.

  • Will Conservatives please explain how they can reconcile this statement by Harper on Goodale's economic statement and Monte's shenangigans...

"Conservative leader Stephen Harper joined the fray, suggesting the government has "neither the democratic mandate or the moral authority" to spend money."

...With his dithering on whether or not he'll vote for the estimates in a few weeks:

"We will not vote against things unless we disagree with them," Harper said at a press conference in Toronto. "So we'll look at those estimates and what's being requested."

So, the Liberals don't have the moral authority to spend money, but he might still vote for their budget estimates? As Jon Stewart would say, whhhaaaaaaaaat?

  • "As Jon Stewart would say, whhhaaaaaaaaat?"

... while rubbing his eyes with both hands in exasperation.

  • I can not believe Monte Solberg's hypocritical attempt to block Ralph Goodale's Fall Financial Update at the Finance Committee tomorrow! Every time the little man (I am referring more to his brain capacity than to his physique) has opened his mouth since 1993 it has been espousing the eternal salvation of tax cuts! For Monte it has always been his mantra of cutting taxes...corporate, industrial, hell even middle class taxes that he has relied upon as the eternal answer to everything that could possibly be wrong with Canada.

Child Poverty? Cut taxes. Urban homelessness? Cut taxes. Lack of adequate quality day care spaces? Cut taxes. For Monte, it is his reason d'etre, the lifeblood of his Libertarian core. Less money for government means less government. So simple.

Yet rather than supporting the current Liberal government in its assumed course of further tax relief in tomorrow's Economic Update, Monte is leading the childish charge of the Conservative, Bloc and NDP members of the Finance Committee to stop the Liberals from continuing to be the "devious weasels" with their " beady little Liberal eyes" (Source: montesolberg.com/blog) who, Monte fears, will use the Financial Update to, get this, cut taxes! Yikes, just how devious can you be?

The claim that he must lead the charge in stopping the Liberal Minority government from using Parliament and its institutions to showcase their policies in the lead up to an election is disingenuous to the core. Governments are judged by their performance, accomplishments and vision. Economic updates are part of the course of government. I suspect that calling Liberals "devious weasels" and returning to the antics of last Spring of impeding Parliament is not going to impress the Canadian Electorate. Monte is my MP, and this is not his shining moment!

  • This won't have effect in reality, that's exactly what I think.
